Start at the storefront itself, then check the game’s developer and publisher separately, follow the platform’s links to their creator pages, and compare those details with the organizations’ independently reached official sites. Treat matching names, contact details, and verification labels as corroborating signals—not proof that a listing is safe or authentic.
Start with the store listing, not a link in a message
- Open the platform’s app or type its official web address yourself.
- Search for the game by title and open its listing. Avoid relying on an ad result or an unsolicited download link when you are unsure whether a page is genuine.
- Check that the title, artwork, platform, and other identifying details match the game you intended to find.
This is a cautious way to reach the store page; it is not a universal anti-phishing test. A convincing page or search result alone cannot establish who operates it.

Check developer and publisher as separate roles
Read both fields on the listing. Steam says its game store pages prominently show developers and publishers, and the two names may belong to different organizations. The developer is not necessarily the publisher, and neither should be confused with the storefront operator. Steamworks documentation explains that page creators enter developer and publisher names for a game.
Follow the platform’s creator links
Where the storefront makes the developer or publisher name clickable, open that platform-provided page and look for the game among the organization’s other releases. Compare the catalog and branding for consistency. Steam supports developer and publisher links to creator homepages, but creators must set up and link those pages; an absent game is therefore inconclusive. A matching catalog is useful corroboration, not proof that every detail on a listing is accurate. Steam describes its store pages and developer/publisher links; its creator-homepage documentation explains how those links are configured.

Cross-check contact and identity details where available
Public details vary by store, account type, monetization, and applicable rules. Google Play says an app listing can show a developer’s email, phone number, and website. It also says a developer name identifies developer profiles and apps; for monetizing merchant accounts, the full address from the linked Google payments profile must be displayed. These rules do not mean every app listing exposes the same fields. See Google Play’s developer contact information guidance.
If contact information is available, compare it with the developer’s or publisher’s official website, reached independently rather than through a questionable listing. Differences may have an ordinary explanation, but an unexplained mismatch is a reason to pause and seek confirmation.

Understand what a verification label does—and does not—mean
Verification has a specific scope on each platform. Google’s identity requirements can include identity documents for some account setups and a verified developer email; organization developers must verify a phone number displayed on Google Play. Requirements depend on account type and applicable rules. Consult Google Play’s developer verification requirements for the relevant account details.
Epic says its verification process for products or services using Epic Accounts checks whether developers or publishers are the brands they claim to be. Epic also says that this is not an endorsement and does not establish trustworthiness or safety: “Epic Games does not verify the trustworthiness or the safety of any product or service; you should only use those products or services that you know and trust.” That statement applies to Epic’s process, not to other storefronts. Epic’s explanation of verification sets out this distinction.

Use platform policy as context, not authentication
Google Play prohibits listings that mislead users about a relationship with another app or entity, or falsely claim to be the official app of an established entity. A policy against misleading claims helps explain why an “official” claim deserves scrutiny, but the policy itself does not authenticate a particular game listing. Google Play’s impersonation policy describes the restriction.
If details do not match, verify before downloading or paying
- Recheck the store’s developer and publisher fields and open their platform-linked creator pages.
- Visit the developer’s or publisher’s official website by entering its address yourself or using a trusted bookmark. Compare its game catalog and any store links with the listing.
- If the game is missing from a Steam creator page, remember that the page may not have been linked to the listing. Do not treat that absence alone as proof of a fake.
- If the mismatch remains unexplained, pause and contact the organization through independently verified contact details or use the storefront’s support or reporting channel.
What this check can establish
Store fields and creator links can help establish which organizations a platform associates with a listing. Public contact details and identity checks may add context, but their availability and scope vary. These checks do not provide a universal safety test, and a verified identity is not a guarantee that a product is trustworthy. Apple-specific display and verification requirements are not covered here; check Apple’s current official guidance rather than applying Steam, Google Play, or Epic rules to it.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
