Are Devil May Cry Fans Unhappy With the Anime’s Dante and Lady?

Criticism of Netflix’s Devil May Cry focuses on Dante’s prominence, Lady’s characterization, and tonal changes—but it does not establish that fans broadly reject the anime.

Some viewers have criticized how Netflix’s Devil May Cry portrays Dante and Lady, but the available evidence does not show that fans broadly—or in measurable numbers—reject the adaptation. The disagreement is about specific choices: Dante’s prominence and competence, Lady’s characterization and language, and how the show’s darker, more dramatic tone compares with expectations from the games.

What the anime changes—and what it keeps

Netflix describes Devil May Cry as an animated series based on Capcom’s game franchise, led by Adi Shankar and animated by Studio Mir. Its story follows Dante, an orphaned demon hunter for hire, amid a conflict involving a portal between the human and demon realms. Johnny Yong Bosch voices Dante; Scout Taylor-Compton voices Lady, whom the show’s episode summaries also call Mary. Netflix Tudum’s series guide and the official series page identify the premise and characters.

The adaptation is not meant to reproduce the games scene for scene. Bosch put it plainly: “It’s not one to one.” He said many backstories remain intact, while some “meeting points” differ because the series is opening up the characters further. That distinction matters: a changed encounter or emphasis is not automatically a contradiction of game canon, but it can change which traits dominate a viewer’s impression of a character.

Why Dante and Lady’s portrayals can divide viewers

Dante: swagger, humor, and perceived underuse

One recurring criticism in fan discussion is that Dante can feel “underplayed.” That wording points to a concrete expectation: the games often make Dante’s confidence, irreverence, and combat prowess central to the experience. An adaptation that gives more room to other characters, conflict, or vulnerability may strike some viewers as less recognizably Dante, even when it is making an intentional story choice.

Showrunner Adi Shankar has described the games as “very maximalist” and said season one’s sixth episode was designed to “go quiet. Turn down the volume.” He also said he wanted antagonists whose own perspective makes them the hero of their story. Those comments explain some tonal and narrative decisions; they do not establish whether the resulting balance works for every viewer. Shankar’s interview with IGN discusses that approach.

Lady: a human anchor, not a supernatural equal

Some discussion threads object to Lady “swearing too much,” while other reactions focus more broadly on whether the anime’s characterization feels right. These are examples of fan phrasing, not evidence of how most viewers feel. Lady also occupies a distinct position in the story: she is human, without Dante’s supernatural powers, so her agency and resilience are expressed differently from his.

Bosch argued that Lady was introduced in the games as a “badass” and a strong character, but that later development softened some of what he considered distinctive about her. He said the anime explores “her darkness in the things that she’s gone through.” That is the actor’s interpretation of both the game character and the adaptation, rather than a settled account shared by all fans. Taylor-Compton described anime Lady as “the heart, not in the soft sentimental way” and “the human anchor” of a world where she has no powers. IGN’s cast interview includes their comments.

What the cast and showrunner say they were aiming for

The performers’ explanations make the adaptation’s priorities clearer, but they do not settle the disagreement. Bosch frames the changes as a way to open up characters while retaining much of their backstory. Taylor-Compton emphasizes Lady’s humanity and the weight of her past. Shankar’s account of the show’s quieter moments and perspective-driven antagonists suggests that season one sought more than nonstop swagger and action.

Shankar also addressed fan feedback in a May 2025 interview: “Yes, I listen to fan feedback. And no, I don’t try to please everyone. That’s a trap.” He said he wanted to honor the franchise’s “emotional contract” while still surprising and challenging fans. GamesRadar+’s interview with Shankar records that response.

Season two adds a counterpoint, not a fan consensus

The argument is not frozen at season one. Netflix says season two is streaming and that the series has been renewed for a third and final season; its season-two premise centers on a conflict between Dante and his estranged twin brother Vergil. The announcement describes season three as forthcoming, not released. Netflix Tudum’s June 4, 2026 update has the current status.

A GamesRadar+ review published May 12, 2026 argues that season two feels more confident about Dante and may suit viewers who thought the first season “nerfed” him. That is one critic’s assessment, not proof that fans as a group changed their minds or that season two resolves every objection.

How to judge the disagreement for yourself

When comparing the anime with the games, it helps to separate several questions that online arguments can blur together:

  • Backstory and motivation: Which histories carry over, and which encounters or motivations have been changed?
  • Action and competence: Do the skills and victories shown on screen match what you expect from the games?
  • Season and format: Is the comparison between season one’s setup and the games, or between season two’s later development and that same expectation?

These distinctions help explain why two viewers can agree on what happened in a scene yet disagree about whether it feels true to Dante or Lady. Someone who prioritizes Dante’s dominance in action may judge a quieter or less central role differently from someone interested in the series’ ensemble story; a viewer who values Lady’s toughness may welcome the anime’s focus on her past while still disliking its dialogue or tone.

Does the title’s claim hold up?

There is a real adaptation dispute, and criticism about Dante being underplayed or Lady swearing too much is part of the discussion. But no named, year-attributed statistic or representative survey in the cited material measures dissatisfaction, so “fans aren’t happy” should not be read as a quantified or universal verdict. The strongest supported conclusion is narrower: some viewers object to particular choices, the creators describe those choices as deliberate, and at least one season-two review sees a more assured Dante in the later episodes.
