Yes—mods can affect Stardew Valley multiplayer, but compatibility depends on the individual mod. A mod that loads in single-player is not automatically suitable for co-op, and there is no universal rule that every player must install exactly the same mods. Check each mod’s multiplayer instructions and current compatibility status before your group starts a farm.
Can you play Stardew Valley multiplayer with mods?
Often, yes, but it depends on what a mod does and what its author says about multiplayer. Consult the mod’s own page and the current SMAPI compatibility list; do not treat successful single-player loading as proof that it works in co-op.

The compatibility list covers known SMAPI mods and incompatible content packs, and indicates whether they work with current Stardew Valley and SMAPI versions. It is updated regularly. It excludes XNB mods and content packs already considered compatible, so it is not a complete inventory of every modification a player might use.
The Stardew Valley Wiki’s Modding: Player Guide/Getting Started says, “SMAPI will also automatically disable most incompatible SMAPI mods.” That safeguard is useful, but it does not certify every mod as multiplayer-compatible or replace checking its instructions.

Do all players need the same mods?
There is no one rule for every mod. The mod’s own compatibility notes determine whether it belongs on the host’s computer, each farmhand’s computer, or both. For a group, agree on the required installation and versions before joining, and include any dependencies listed by the mod.
As a practical way to assess a mod, check whether it changes shared world or gameplay state or only a player’s local interface or presentation. This is a useful question to ask while reading the mod’s instructions, not a guarantee of compatibility: the author’s multiplayer guidance remains the deciding source.

SMAPI’s multiplayer API can report information about connected peers who also use SMAPI, including game version, SMAPI version, platform, and mod count. This can help mod authors diagnose differences between setups; it does not mean a particular mod will work in multiplayer.
How to check mod and version compatibility
- Check the current requirements. Confirm that everyone’s Stardew Valley and SMAPI versions meet the current requirements shown on the official SMAPI website.
- Check each mod. Search for it in the SMAPI compatibility list, then read its own page for multiplayer support, installation requirements, dependencies, and which players need it.
- Coordinate the group’s setup. Have each player install the required mods and dependencies at compatible versions. If the mod’s status or instructions call for an update or removal, do that before trying to join.
Version references can go stale quickly. At the time reflected in the official SMAPI site, SMAPI 4.5.2 required Stardew Valley 1.6.14 or later on Linux, macOS, Windows, and Steam Deck. Check the live site rather than relying on those version numbers for a new installation.
Compatibility also changes over time. As historical context, the Stardew Valley Wiki reported that 44% of SMAPI mods were ready on day one of Stardew Valley 1.6 in 2024. That was an early-release snapshot, not a current compatibility percentage.

Work through basic co-op setup first, then investigate version, mod, and network differences. The Stardew Valley Wiki’s multiplayer connection checklist uses Stardew Valley 1.6.15 as its latest-PC-version reference; that is a point-in-time reference, so check the current game version separately.

- Review mods individually. Check each mod’s current compatibility status and multiplayer instructions. Update or temporarily remove a mod if its listing or instructions indicate a problem.
- Check the host’s farm setup. The host should launch the save through Co-op and select Host Farm, make sure enough cabins are available, and set the server online.
- Check how everyone launches. The checklist advises that every player launch through Steam or GOG Galaxy.
- Investigate connection blockers. If the setup and mod checks are sound, check firewall, antivirus, and router or other network issues.
