If you want both controllers to operate as one, PS5’s Assist Controller feature assigns them to the same user. If two people want to play as separate players, the game must support local multiplayer, and its own join flow determines whether the second person can use a guest or needs another user or account.
Two controllers can share one user—or serve separate players
Connecting a second controller does not automatically require a second account. The key distinction is what you want the second controller to do:
- Help control one player: Use Assist Controller. Both controllers are assigned to the same user and function as one controller.
- Play as another person: Join through the game’s local multiplayer flow. That creates a separate player slot only if the game supports one, and the game determines what kind of user or account is accepted.
Sony describes Assist Controller as allowing two controllers to be used “as if they are one controller” in its PS5 accessibility settings guide. It is an assistance feature, not a way to add a second player.
Use two controllers as one Assist Controller
- Pair both controllers with the PS5.
- From the home screen, open Settings > Accessibility > Controllers > Use Second Controller for Assistance.
- Turn on Use Assist Controller.
- Press the PS button on the controller you want to use as the main controller and assign it to a user.
- Press the PS button on the assist controller and assign it to the same user.
Once set up, both controllers operate as one controller. Sony says supported options include DualSense, DualSense Edge, and supported third-party PS5 controllers, but compatibility depends on the main-and-assist pairing. A DualSense Edge can be the main controller but not the assist controller. Haptics, adaptive triggers, microphone functions, and custom button assignments are unavailable on the assist controller. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Let a second person play separately
Pair the second controller, press its PS button, then follow the game’s prompts to join. The PS5 user-selection screen supports adding a user, and guest login may be restricted by console settings, as Sony explains in its guest login safety guidance. Whether a guest is accepted—or any additional account is required—depends on the game. Check that title’s official local-multiplayer instructions and store listing for its player limit and account requirements.
Two connected controllers do not guarantee two local player slots. Sony says a PS5 can connect up to four controllers, but that is a console connection limit, not a promise that a particular game supports four players. Sony’s Access controller guidance also says only one player per console can pair and use the Access controller(s); that hardware rule does not determine the player count in other games.

When account sharing or PlayStation Plus matters
Console Sharing and Offline Play is about access to games and benefits, not connecting controllers. When enabled, other users on that PS5 can play the enabling account’s purchased and downloaded games, including while the console is offline, and use some PlayStation Plus benefits. It can be enabled on one PS5 at a time. See Sony’s Console Sharing and Offline Play instructions if another user cannot access a game.
PlayStation Plus is required for online multiplayer in some games, according to Sony’s online multiplayer support page. That does not establish a general Plus requirement for local multiplayer on one console; check the individual game’s listing for its requirements.
