In the Season of the Witch-era route, Necrochasm came from the Bottomless Pit quest tied to Crota’s End. Its catalyst was a separate raid reward: complete two timed Crota’s Minions plate puzzles, then meet the Essence of the Oversoul requirement to unlock the catalyst upgrade. These are historical 2023–24 mechanics, not confirmation of today’s live quest steps or drop tuning.
How Necrochasm was earned in Crota’s End
Bungie announced Necrochasm’s return with the reprised Crota’s End raid on August 31, 2023. The weapon was tied to the Bottomless Pit quest obtained from the raid vendor. Bungie’s announcement described two routes:

- During the 48-hour Contest Mode: Players who acquired Bottomless Pit from the raid vendor during that window had the quest automatically completed and received Husk of the Pit, a fully Masterworked Eidolon Ally, and Necrochasm.
- After Contest Mode: Players who acquired the quest afterward had to complete Bottomless Pit from the beginning.
Essence of the Oversoul was part of the quest. The season itself ran from August 22 through November 28, 2023, at weekly reset, according to Bungie Help. Those dates place the route in its historical context; they do not establish the current vendor location, quest menu, or requirements.
How Essence of the Oversoul affected the route
Essence served both the Bottomless Pit quest and the catalyst’s unlock condition. In a September 14, 2023 update, Bungie responded to feedback about Essence availability by announcing these Crota’s End opportunities:
#1 Best Overall
- From the makers of the acclaimed hit game Destiny, comes the much-anticipated sequel
- An action shooter that takes you on an epic journey across the solar system
- Humanity’s last safe city has fallen to an overwhelming invasion force, led by Ghaul, the imposing commander of the brutal Red Legion
- To defeat the Red Legion and confront Ghaul, you must reunite humanity’s scattered heroes, stand together, and fight back to reclaim our home
- On the first full clear each week, one guaranteed Essence from defeating Crota and one additional guaranteed Essence for completing each encounter in order.
- On later full clears, one additional guaranteed Essence.
- Increased random Essence drops on repeated encounter clears.
- A chance to receive all necessary Essence when defeating Crota during a full run.
These are the drop opportunities Bungie announced in 2023, not independently verified current drop rates. The same update reported that 525,376 Guardians entered Crota’s End, 53,122,289 were downed, 37,720 defeated Crota, and players spent 3,985,517 total hours in the raid. Those are historical figures from 2023, not current player counts or a measure of present-day difficulty.
How to get the Necrochasm catalyst
Separate earning the catalyst from meeting its Essence requirement. Bungie’s Necrochasm item definition describes the catalyst as a Masterwork upgrade and says collecting Essence of the Oversoul unlocks it. A July 2024 Bungie Help forum support response explains that the catalyst itself is earned by completing two timed Crota’s Minions plate puzzles during the raid.

The forum response gives a total of 35 Essence: 20 associated with Necrochasm and 15 more for the catalyst insertion condition. Treat that number as the response’s account of the 2024 requirement, rather than a guarantee that current in-game text is unchanged.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the catalyst can seem to be missing
The two steps can happen in either order: Essence progress may satisfy the unlock condition before the raid puzzles award the catalyst. In that case, a triumph or completion notification can appear even though the catalyst has not dropped into your inventory. The forum response identifies this as a common source of confusion.
