Death Stranding runs across three broad regions—East, Central, and West—as Sam’s journey moves from east to west. Use this guide to orient yourself among the major hubs and plan safer, more practical deliveries. It is not a coordinate-complete map or a verified list of every facility, order location, or side-quest destination.

How the world map is divided

A third-party Death Stranding map compilation describes the game world as East, Central, and West, with the story’s journey progressing westward. It characterizes Central as the largest region and West as the smallest; those are the guide’s relative descriptions, not official measurements.

Think of the regions as broad orientation rather than a complete atlas. The terrain, weather, hazards, and available infrastructure change from one delivery area to another. A route that works for one order may be a poor choice for another.

Major cities and hubs to recognize

The names below are useful landmarks when thinking about orders and network growth. “City” is used broadly here: the game includes cities as well as distribution centers and other facilities. This is an orientation list, not a claim to enumerate every location.

Death Stranding Director's Cut - Playstation 5
  • Remastered for the Playstation 5 Console - Take on the trials of Sam bridges with advanced combat, more character actions and a competitive Ranking system for special player challenges.
  • Expanded content - Make use of additional weapons and vehicles, take on new enemy types and explore new locations such as the firing range and racetrack, featuring extra missions and minigames.
  • New discoveries - experience an extended storyline through new missions in an expanded area.
  • Unique social strand system - stay connected with other players from around the globe. (Internet and account for Playstation network required.)
  • East: Capital Knot City and Port Knot City are prominent early-story hubs.
  • Central: Lake Knot City, South Knot City, Mountain Knot City, and Central Knot City are key named hubs. Distribution centers and smaller facilities also serve as delivery destinations and stops.
  • West: Edge Knot City is a major destination in the westward journey.

The matching third-party guide’s list mixes cities, distribution centers, and smaller or endgame references, and repeats Capital Knot City. Check the in-game map for the exact facility name and position for your current order rather than treating any quick list as a definitive gazetteer.

Plan a route before setting out

Start with the order details, then inspect the map and the ground between you and the destination. Kojima Productions’ official tips for connecting the Eastern Region recommend planning deliveries and using the Odradek to identify safer ground. The official Director’s Cut beginner’s guide emphasizes that route and topography planning matter because terrain, climate, and delivery conditions vary.

  1. Review the order and cargo. Note the destination, load, and any delivery conditions. Fragile or heavy cargo can make a rough shortcut less attractive.
  2. Inspect the terrain. Look for steep slopes, rough ground, rivers, and areas where hazards or weather may complicate travel. In Director’s Cut, tilt the map to judge slope.
  3. Compare practical options. Consider distance and setup time alongside terrain, risk, cargo condition, and infrastructure. A direct line is not automatically the quickest or safest route.
  4. Mark the route. PlayStation explains that you can place multiple map markers and connect them to chart a delivery route; markers can also appear in compass mode while you travel. See the PlayStation Blog’s Director’s Cut feature overview.
  5. Recheck as conditions change. Scan the ground while moving and adjust if hazards, terrain, or infrastructure make your plan impractical.

There is no single “best route” for every order. Compare possible routes on these points:

Death Stranding - PlayStation 4
  • From legendary game creator Hideo Kojima comes an all-new, genre-defying experience for the PlayStation 4.
  • Sam bridges must brave a world utterly transformed by the death stranding.
  • Carrying the disconnected remnants of our future in his hands, he embarks on a journey to reconnect the shattered world one step at a time.
  • Time and distance: Include detours and any time spent setting up equipment or infrastructure. Without measured comparisons, do not assume the shortest-looking path is fastest.
  • Terrain and load: Steep slopes, uneven ground, and rivers may cost more time or threaten cargo, especially with a heavy load.
  • Hazards: BT areas, MULE territory, and Timefall can add risk or make a direct approach costly.
  • Infrastructure: Roads, bridges, ziplines, player-built structures, and established paths can change which route is practical. Kojima Productions notes that online structures and footpaths may appear within Chiral Network coverage.

Useful route patterns—and when to avoid them

Heavy cargo across rough country

When carrying a heavy load, a longer path through a valley or lowland may be preferable to a steep ridge shortcut. That is a situational route-planning recommendation, not a tested guarantee: compare the actual slopes and ground on your map, then scan as you approach.

Routes with established infrastructure

Where a road, bridge, zipline, or useful player structure is available, compare the supported corridor with a direct cross-country line. Infrastructure can save difficult traversal, but its usefulness depends on where it leads and whether it suits your cargo and destination.

Rivers and vehicle travel

Do not assume a Reverse Trike can cross every river. Kojima Productions warns that deeper water drains its battery, and red scanner markers indicate deeper areas where the bike can sink. Choose between riding and walking based on the crossing and surrounding terrain.

Hazards, cargo, and equipment to account for

BT areas and Timefall

Check BT locations before entering an affected area. The official tips advise watching the Odradek’s movements, moving slowly, and holding your breath when passing nearby. Timefall exposure also makes the condition of cargo containers worth checking; Container Repair Spray is one repair option identified in the guide.

MULE territory

Sensor poles mark a MULE camp’s boundary. Kojima Productions cautions that scanned cargo can draw MULEs toward its location, so account for the camp and your cargo when deciding whether to cross, detour, or approach carefully.

Rough ground and long deliveries

For difficult terrain or longer trips, the official tips recommend carrying ladders, climbing anchors, and container repair spray. Distribution Centers can serve as possible rest stops. Heavy loads are more affected by rough terrain, so equipment and a suitable path matter more when cargo is difficult to handle.

Routes can change

PlayStation notes that voidouts can alter surrounding terrain. A previously familiar path may therefore need a fresh look; scan and reassess rather than assuming yesterday’s route remains practical.

Director’s Cut route guides are only an early aid

Death Stranding Director’s Cut includes recommended route guides for some early missions. PlayStation says those guides do not appear in later missions, so they are an introduction to route planning rather than a permanent answer for every delivery. Use map markers, terrain inspection, and field scans to plan independently as the journey continues.
