In August 2024, Deadlock drew a reported 16,947 concurrent players on SteamDB before Valve had announced or revealed it, according to GameSpot. That was a snapshot of people playing at the same time—not a count of everyone who had played the game.
What did the 16,000-player figure mean?
GameSpot reported on August 13, 2024, that SteamDB showed 16,947 concurrent players for Deadlock. “Concurrent” means players online in the game at the same time. It does not mean 16,947 distinct people over a day, week, or the game’s lifetime. GameSpot also said a little over 13,000 were playing at the moment of its report; that was a separate, time-specific reading. GameSpot’s August 13, 2024 report attributed the figures to SteamDB.
How does that compare with Deadlock’s later peak?
SteamDB’s chart recorded an all-time peak of 236,730 concurrent players on October 6, 2026. This is also a simultaneous-player metric, but it is a later peak—not a unique-player total and not a measure of how many people played across the entire period. The two figures are therefore comparable as dated Steam concurrent-player readings, not as counts of total audience or player growth. SteamDB’s Deadlock chart identifies its data as third-party chart information and notes that SteamDB is not affiliated with Valve or Steam.
Is Deadlock still unannounced?
“Unannounced” describes the framing of GameSpot’s August 2024 report: it said Deadlock had not been announced or revealed at that time. The later SteamDB listing, updated October 8, 2026, still gives the release date as “To be announced,” but that wording does not establish whether or when Valve formally announced the game. The available listing does not verify an announcement date or provide a direct statement from Valve about announcement status.

What is Deadlock, and who makes it?
SteamDB’s listing names Valve as both developer and publisher and describes Deadlock as a multiplayer game in early development. It lists Windows as the supported system and tags the game as a MOBA, third-person shooter, hero shooter, team-based, and competitive. Those genre labels are SteamDB’s listing tags. Why different player counts can tell different stories
A live counter, a recorded history, and an all-time peak are different measurements. SteamDashboard says its live count comes from Steam services, but its plotted history consists of ten-minute samples recorded from July 2, 2026 onward, is not backfilled, and covers a limited window. That series cannot be treated as a complete history of Deadlock’s player activity. SteamDashboard’s Deadlock charts.
