Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor a flexible PvE Nightstalker, build around dodge-driven invisibility and choose your second Aspect for the job: Stylish Executioner for a debuff-and-invisibility loop, or Trapper’s Ambush for smoke-based control and ally support. Then select your melee, Shadowshot, grenade and Fragments to fit the encounter. There is no evidence-backed universal “best” setup, and Bungie’s ability changes mean you should check live in-game descriptions before relying on specific timings or effects.
What a Nightstalker build is designed to do
Nightstalker is the Hunter’s Void subclass, built around stealth, enemy debuffs and tether control. Its build choices are easiest to understand as different ways to balance four jobs: keeping yourself alive, helping allies, weakening targets and dealing with groups or priority enemies.

Bungie’s Void 3.0 overview describes three core Nightstalker Aspects: Vanishing Step grants invisibility when you dodge; Stylish Executioner grants invisibility and Truesight after defeating a target affected by a Void debuff; and Trapper’s Ambush uses smoke to weaken enemies and make allies invisible. The practical choice is not simply which Aspect sounds strongest, but which effect your activity and team need.
Choose Aspects around your build’s job
Vanishing Step: reliable personal escape
Vanishing Step gives you a direct dodge-to-invisibility tool. It is a useful foundation when you want a dependable way to disengage, reposition or recover, without first needing to defeat a debuffed enemy.
#1 Best Overall
Stylish Executioner: reward for debuff kills
Stylish Executioner suits a more aggressive loop: apply a Void debuff, defeat an affected target, then use the resulting invisibility and Truesight to move or line up your next action. It is most useful when the activity gives you consistent chances to finish debuffed enemies. If you cannot reliably trigger that condition, the Aspect’s central payoff will be less dependable.
Trapper’s Ambush: smoke control and ally support
Trapper’s Ambush is the team-oriented option. Its smoke can weaken enemies while making allies invisible, so it fits situations where you need to control a group, create a safer reposition, or support teammates rather than focus only on your own kill loop.
A practical pairing is Vanishing Step with Stylish Executioner for self-directed survivability and debuff kills, or Vanishing Step with Trapper’s Ambush for personal escape plus smoke-based support. Treat those as build directions, not a claim that either pairing is universally optimal. Bungie previewed a Trapper’s Ambush rework in its 2026 Monument of Triumph article, so verify the current Aspect effects and available slots in game.

Select a melee for control or aggression
Smoke Bomb: weaken and disrupt
Smoke Bomb is the control-minded choice. It can set up Void debuffs and disrupt enemies. In a 2024 tuning preview, Bungie said Snare Bomb smoke linger was extended from 3 to 5 seconds and gained escalating damage over time; the same preview extended Trapper’s Ambush smoke from 4.5 to 6 seconds and added that damage behavior. Those are dated tuning values, not a guarantee of current live timings. Check the ability description in game before building around exact duration or damage.
Bungie’s Final Shape tuning preview also said Stylish Executioner’s weaken effect could apply with glaive melee attacks, which can matter if your weapon and playstyle support that interaction. Confirm the live behavior before depending on it.
Phantom Surge: an aggressive alternative
Bungie previewed Phantom Surge as a new Nightstalker melee in 2026. The preview describes a forward dash slash that deals more damage to Void-debuffed targets and generates Void Overshields from combatants hit. That makes it an appealing direction if you want to close distance and capitalize on debuffs, rather than use smoke primarily for control. Its release and final live behavior should be checked in game, since the source describes a preview.

Pick Shadowshot by role
| Super | Best suited to | What the cited Bungie material establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Deadfall | Tether control and a strong Weaken effect | Bungie’s November 2025 Renegades tuning preview raised Deadfall’s Weaken from 30% to 35% and described it as the strongest Weaken in the game at that time. This is a dated balance statement, not a current comparative test. |
| Moebius Quiver | Tracking volleys and applying pressure to tethered targets | Bungie’s 2022 Void 3.0 overview says its volleys track targets and make tethered targets volatile. The cited material does not establish a current damage ranking against Deadfall. |
Choose Deadfall when your priority is tether control and Weaken, or Moebius Quiver when its volley behavior better fits the encounter. Do not assume one always does more damage: that depends on current balance and the activity. Bungie’s Renegades abilities tuning preview is the source for the 35% Deadfall figure; check the live description for later changes.
Tune grenades and Fragments to the loop
Grenades and Fragments should solve a specific build problem, not fill slots by habit. Bungie’s Void 3.0 overview describes grenades as shared across Void subclasses and Fragments as complementary perks. It gives two examples that illustrate useful directions:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Need more reliable weakening? Echo of Undermining weakens enemies hit by Void grenades, according to Bungie’s Void 3.0 overview.
- Want grenade damage to feed melee access? Echo of Provision grants melee energy from grenade damage, as described in the same overview.
These examples are not a definitive current meta list. Pick a grenade and Fragment combination that supports your chosen loop—debuff application, ability uptime, damage or survival—and account for any stat tradeoffs shown in game. If your build depends on a particular interaction, read its live description rather than assuming an older guide’s wording still applies.

Adapt the build for Crucible
In PvP, start from the same decision about how you want to create safe movement, but do not carry PvE damage or uptime assumptions into the Crucible. Vanishing Step offers dodge-triggered invisibility. Stylish Executioner can support a debuff-triggered invisibility and Truesight loop, but only if you can consistently apply its trigger in the mode you are playing. Smoke Bomb can contribute to disorientation and weaken; Bungie’s Void 3.0 overview describes Snare Bomb’s effects on enemy HUD visibility and screen clarity.
Choose Shadowshot and Fragments for the mode, map and team plan rather than treating a PvE setup as a ready-made competitive loadout. The cited material does not establish a universal current Crucible build.
Account for balance changes
Nightstalker’s documented effects have changed over time, so older descriptions may not match the live game. Bungie’s Update 9.7.0 notes, dated June 9, 2026, called it the final major patch while allowing for smaller maintenance patches and hotfixes afterward. That means even the latest major-patch description is not proof that no later adjustments occurred.
