Vault of Glass has five encounter challenges, each adding a specific restriction to the encounter’s normal objective. The key is to agree on roles and callouts before starting: a duplicated Oracle assignment or an early Wyvern kill can fail a challenge even when the raid is otherwise under control. Challenge availability and rewards can change, so check the in-game challenge text and Director rotation before your run.

Wait For It… — Confluxes
During the Conflux defense, a Wyvern must be allowed to reach a Conflux and begin its sacrifice animation before anyone kills it. Killing it while it is still approaching does not satisfy the challenge condition.
- Keep control of the other enemies without shooting the approaching Wyvern.
- Watch for the Wyvern to begin the sacrifice animation at the Conflux.
- Call the animation, then kill the Wyvern.
The Only Oracle For You — Oracles
Each player may destroy a given Oracle only once across the Oracle encounter. The team should assign targets before the first wave and track who has already destroyed each one.
- Agree on Oracle positions and assign players to separate targets, or plan a rotation that changes assignments between waves.
- As each sequence appears, call the sequence and name the player assigned to each Oracle.
- Before firing, confirm that the assigned player has not already destroyed that Oracle during the encounter.
Out of Its Way — Templar
The Templar must never complete a teleport during the encounter. The Relic holder typically blocks the marked teleport location while teammates maintain damage and handle the Oracles.

- Assign the Relic holder to watch the marked teleport location.
- Call each teleport attempt so the holder can move to block it.
- Keep the rest of the team focused on damage and Oracle duties without leaving the teleport location uncovered.
Strangers in Time — Gatekeepers
This challenge hinges on the kill order for the Praetorian and Wyvern across the two portals. Because the exact sequence should be checked against the current in-game challenge text, settle the required priority before the encounter rather than improvising after enemies appear.
- Assign the players responsible for each portal and designate who will handle the required target first in each timeline.
- Use short, consistent callouts for the Praetorian, Wyvern, and kill priority.
- Have the outside team control the center and keep a clear route for the Relic team to return.
- Confirm the required order in the active challenge text before starting, especially if the game has changed the encounter rules.
Ensemble’s Refrain — Atheon
When Atheon sends players through a portal, every teleported player must destroy exactly one Oracle during that set. No player should take a second Oracle, and no Oracle should be left without an assigned shooter.

- Before the first set, agree on the Oracle order and assign one distinct target to each teleported player.
- Call the sequence and each player’s target clearly, coordinating with the home team.
- Each teleported player destroys one Oracle, then returns safely for the damage phase.
What is known about challenge mode and rewards
Bungie’s May 20, 2021 description of the Vault of Glass launch race said teams had to clear the raid with Contest Mode active before Challenge Mode became available in the Director. In that specific 2021 Challenge Mode, failing an encounter Triumph condition caused a wipe. That launch-race rule is historical context, not confirmation that every later challenge run works the same way. Bungie’s May 20, 2021 announcement.
In a July 1, 2021 announcement, Bungie said Master Vault of Glass challenge completions awarded the featured Timelost weapon, which rotated with the available challenge, and that Normal and Master shared weekly reward lockouts. The five encounter names and rules above identify the challenge objectives, but the active weekly challenge and current reward rules are not established here. Check the Director to see which challenge is available and read the in-game challenge text—particularly for Gatekeepers—before assigning roles.
