Blizzard’s June 12, 2023, Diablo IV Hotfix 9 reduced elite density across dungeons, aiming to make one dungeon less clearly efficient than the rest. Players who had favored Ruins of Eridu as a fast leveling farm objected that Blizzard was reducing the standout option instead of making other dungeons and XP sources more rewarding. The official note did not name Eridu specifically; the dungeon’s reported post-hotfix changes came from contemporary player-facing tests.
What Blizzard changed—and what it said
Hotfix 9 for Diablo IV version 1.0.2, dated June 12, 2023, listed “Further adjustments to elite monster density in dungeons” under Dungeons. The accompanying developer note gave the rationale: “We are standardizing the density of elite monsters that spawn in dungeons to ensure that no particular dungeon is clearly more efficient to run through than others.” PC Gamer quoted the note, which was also reproduced in a Blizzard-hosted forum thread.

The official wording addressed dungeon elite density generally, not Ruins of Eridu by name. So the most accurate description is that Eridu was caught up in a broad density adjustment, rather than that Blizzard announced a dungeon-specific nerf with a separate explanation.
Why Ruins of Eridu had become a popular farm
Contemporary coverage tied Eridu’s leveling appeal to its elite enemies and the “Slay All Enemies” objective. Wowhead reported that before the hotfix, killing a certain number of monsters could trigger additional enemies to spawn on a random party member. Players could split up and take advantage of those spawns to clear the dungeon quickly.

In control runs after the hotfix, Wowhead observed fewer elite monsters and did not see the same additional enemies spawning on players after enough kills. That is the outlet’s reported observation, not a technical explanation from Blizzard. Wowhead also raised the possibility that the spawning behavior had been rolled back more broadly, but did not establish that as the confirmed cause.
The available contemporary reporting does not establish a dependable number for elites removed, XP lost per run, or XP per hour. Any precise before-and-after figure would overstate what these sources show.

Why players were angry
The dispute was about more than losing one efficient route. For players who enjoyed dense combat or relied on it to level, reducing the standout farm felt like taking away a rewarding option without improving the alternatives. PC Gamer characterized much of the backlash as opposition to nerfing lucrative XP farms instead of boosting other progression sources.
- Keep the fun and density: Some players liked the intensity of Eridu’s encounters, including for builds that benefited from dense groups. These are individual views in forum discussions, not evidence of a majority opinion.
- Improve other ways to level: Commenters called for better XP from other activities and dungeons, including Nightmare Dungeons. The contemporary sources do not quantify how those activities compared with Eridu.
- Avoid making progression feel slower: Players worried that taking away an unusually productive option would make leveling less appealing if other sources remained less rewarding in their experience.
One player’s Blizzard forum thread was titled “Ruins of Eridu nerfed, Whats next? Just gonna kill all fun in the game?” That title captures its author’s frustration, not a measured consensus. PC Gamer also reproduced the Reddit thread title “Devs, we run dungeons to level because the XP everywhere else sucks!”—a player’s assertion, not verified comparative XP data.

Why some players defended the adjustment
The opposing argument was that an outlier farm can crowd out other content: if one dungeon is clearly more efficient, players may feel pushed toward repeating it rather than choosing among dungeons. That concern aligns with Blizzard’s stated goal of standardizing elite density. Some contemporaneous commenters also argued that unusually high spawns were not intended.
The discussion therefore turned on a genuine tradeoff: preserve an unusually dense, enjoyable route, or reduce the efficiency gap so other dungeons remain viable choices. The available sources document disagreement over whether Eridu’s spawning behavior was intended; they do not resolve that technical question beyond Blizzard’s general density-standardization rationale.

What the controversy does—and does not—tell us
The dispute is a snapshot from June 2023, not a guide to the current Diablo IV build. The hotfix, Wowhead’s tests, and contemporaneous player discussions do not establish Ruins of Eridu’s elite density, leveling efficiency, or balance in the game version current in October 2026.
Nor do forum posts or upvotes establish how most players felt. They show that some players wanted denser combat and stronger alternatives, while others supported keeping dungeon efficiency in line. The clearest documented point is Blizzard’s stated aim: prevent any one dungeon from being clearly more efficient to run than others.
