DOOM + DOOM II’s Update 2 lets players bring compatible community mods into multiplayer. To use one with friends, the host activates it before opening multiplayer, every player subscribes to that same mod, and Bethesda recommends joining with a room code. The feature is not a guarantee that every mod works online.
How multiplayer mod support works
Bethesda added the feature in Update 2, released January 28, 2025. Its notes list mods authored with Vanilla DOOM, DeHackEd, MBF21, or BOOM as compatible formats. Those format names describe what the game supports; they do not guarantee that every mod made with them will work in a multiplayer match. Bethesda’s Update 2 release notes recommend room codes for modified matches.

Set up the same mod for everyone
Find and subscribe to a mod
- Launch DOOM + DOOM II and select a game.
- Open Mods, then look through Featured Mods or choose Browse.
- Open the mod’s details page and subscribe to it.
- When ready, select Play from the Mods menu.
Bethesda Support also says players can subscribe on the web if they are logged in with the same account they use in the game. See Bethesda’s mod-install instructions.
Prepare a modified match
- The host activates the chosen mod before entering the multiplayer menu.
- Each participant subscribes to that same mod before joining.
- Use a room code to bring friends into the modified match, following Bethesda’s recommendation.
If a player does not have the mod, Update 3 notes say someone viewing a match running a mod they lack will be sent to the Mods page. Update 3 also records a fix for a multiplayer crash with BTSX Episode 2. Bethesda’s Update 3 release notes were published April 10, 2025 and updated April 29 to correct a music-pitch detail.

What else changed in Update 2
The January 2025 update also fixed multiple community-reported crashes while loading saves, improved pickup behavior and spectator mode in co-op, added player colors, and optimized multiplayer networking code, according to the official Update 2 notes.
Other ways to play with friends
The combined release supports online co-op and Deathmatch for up to 16 players with cross-platform play. Bethesda’s August 8, 2024 release notes describe four-player split-screen on all platforms and eight-player split-screen on Xbox Series X|S and PC. They also note that some platforms may disable cross-play at the system level. Bethesda’s combined-release notes and FAQ distinguish online play from local options:

Mod availability differs by platform
Bethesda says community members can upload mods on PC, while players can download and play community mods on all platforms. Nintendo Switch is a specific exception: it displays Featured Mods only, due to platform policies. A Bethesda.net account is required for the online and mod features flagged in Bethesda’s product information. See the DOOM + DOOM II product page and the release FAQ for those platform qualifications.
