DOOM + DOOM II’s Update 2 lets players bring compatible community mods into multiplayer. To use one with friends, the host activates it before opening multiplayer, every player subscribes to that same mod, and Bethesda recommends joining with a room code. The feature is not a guarantee that every mod works online.

How multiplayer mod support works

Bethesda added the feature in Update 2, released January 28, 2025. Its notes list mods authored with Vanilla DOOM, DeHackEd, MBF21, or BOOM as compatible formats. Those format names describe what the game supports; they do not guarantee that every mod made with them will work in a multiplayer match. Bethesda’s Update 2 release notes recommend room codes for modified matches.

Set up the same mod for everyone

Find and subscribe to a mod

  1. Launch DOOM + DOOM II and select a game.
  2. Open Mods, then look through Featured Mods or choose Browse.
  3. Open the mod’s details page and subscribe to it.
  4. When ready, select Play from the Mods menu.

Bethesda Support also says players can subscribe on the web if they are logged in with the same account they use in the game. See Bethesda’s mod-install instructions.

Prepare a modified match

  1. The host activates the chosen mod before entering the multiplayer menu.
  2. Each participant subscribes to that same mod before joining.
  3. Use a room code to bring friends into the modified match, following Bethesda’s recommendation.

If a player does not have the mod, Update 3 notes say someone viewing a match running a mod they lack will be sent to the Mods page. Update 3 also records a fix for a multiplayer crash with BTSX Episode 2. Bethesda’s Update 3 release notes were published April 10, 2025 and updated April 29 to correct a music-pitch detail.

#1 Best Overall
Doom: Eternal (Xbox One)
  • Slayer Threat Level at Maximum - gain access to the latest demon-killing tech with the DOOM Slayer's advanced Praetor Suit, including a shoulder-mounted flamethrower and the retractable wrist-mounted DOOM Blade. Upgraded guns and mods, such as the Super Shotgun's new distance-closing Meat Hook attachment, and abilities like the Double Dash make you faster, stronger, and more versatile than ever
  • Unholy Trinity - you can't kill demons when you're dead, and you can't stay alive without resources. Take what you need from your enemies: Glory kill for extra health, incinerate for armor, and chainsaw demons to stock up on ammo. These tools are the key to your survival and becoming the ultimate demon-slayer
  • A New Class of (Destructible) Demon - obliterate more demons than ever before, each with unique attacks and abilities. Fan-favorite classics such as the Pain Elemental, Archvile, and Arachnotron make their return, while a horde of totally-new demons join the roster including the DOOM Hunter, Marauder, and the Gladiator. Rip apart your favorite demons to the core with DOOM Eternal's "destructible demons" system and take your power fantasy to new levels

What else changed in Update 2

The January 2025 update also fixed multiple community-reported crashes while loading saves, improved pickup behavior and spectator mode in co-op, added player colors, and optimized multiplayer networking code, according to the official Update 2 notes.

Other ways to play with friends

The combined release supports online co-op and Deathmatch for up to 16 players with cross-platform play. Bethesda’s August 8, 2024 release notes describe four-player split-screen on all platforms and eight-player split-screen on Xbox Series X|S and PC. They also note that some platforms may disable cross-play at the system level. Bethesda’s combined-release notes and FAQ distinguish online play from local options:

Play option Internet needed? Availability and joining
Online co-op or Deathmatch Yes Up to 16 players; cross-platform play is supported. Room codes are four letters, and system-level settings may disable cross-play.
Local split-screen No Four players on all platforms; eight players on Xbox Series X|S and PC, as stated in the 2024 release notes.
LAN or Switch ad-hoc multiplayer No Bethesda says these can be played offline; consult the game’s platform-specific multiplayer options to connect locally.

Mod availability differs by platform

Bethesda says community members can upload mods on PC, while players can download and play community mods on all platforms. Nintendo Switch is a specific exception: it displays Featured Mods only, due to platform policies. A Bethesda.net account is required for the online and mod features flagged in Bethesda’s product information. See the DOOM + DOOM II product page and the release FAQ for those platform qualifications.

Do owners need to buy the game again?

No new purchase is required for eligible owners of previous digital versions: Bethesda says they receive the combined release through a free update. The Update 2 patch adds its multiplayer-mod feature to DOOM + DOOM II; check Bethesda’s release notes for the original release’s platform and subscription details.
