For most paid games played online on an Xbox console, yes: you need a Game Pass plan that includes online console multiplayer. Xbox currently lists Game Pass Essential, Premium, and Ultimate as including it. The main exception is free-to-play games, whose multiplayer Xbox says is open to every Xbox player without a subscription.
When you need Game Pass for Xbox multiplayer
If you own a paid game and want to play its online multiplayer on an Xbox console, you need a plan with online console multiplayer. Xbox currently lists Essential, Premium, and Ultimate as eligible plans. Xbox’s Game Pass page describes Essential as including online console multiplayer, and its plan comparison lists the feature across the console-capable tiers.
The subscription covers the multiplayer entitlement, not necessarily the game. Xbox notes that games are sold separately, so check whether the game you want to play is included with a plan or must be purchased separately.
Free-to-play games are the exception
You do not need Game Pass to use multiplayer in free-to-play games. Xbox explicitly says access to multiplayer for free-to-play games is open to every Xbox player. If you are unsure whether a particular game qualifies, check its Xbox Store listing.

Which Game Pass plan is enough?
Essential is the lowest of the currently listed plans that includes online console multiplayer. Premium and Ultimate include the same multiplayer feature, but offer different game libraries and other benefits. If multiplayer is your only reason for subscribing, the feature itself does not require you to choose a higher tier.

- Game library: Check whether the games you want are in the catalog. Xbox’s library counts and included titles can change.
- Devices and additional benefits: Compare the plan’s supported platforms and extras against how you play.

Check the specific game before subscribing
- Open the game’s Xbox Store listing and confirm whether it is free-to-play or a paid game.
- Check that the game offers the online multiplayer mode you want; requirements can differ by game.
- If it is a paid game played online on an Xbox console, compare the local Game Pass plans and choose an eligible tier.
- Confirm the current plan benefits and availability for your region on Xbox’s official plan page.
