No—you do not need to buy Battlefield 6 to play Battlefield REDSEC. REDSEC is a separate free-to-play experience. Download its listing from a supported store, then sign in with an EA Account and connect to the internet. Battlefield 6 is optional, not a prerequisite.
How to download Battlefield REDSEC
Choose the store for your platform and search for Battlefield REDSEC—not the paid Battlefield 6 listing. EA’s current download instructions list these routes:
| Platform | Store | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| PC | EA app, Steam, or Epic Games Store | Search for Battlefield REDSEC and choose Download or Play Free. |
| PlayStation 5 | PlayStation Store | Search for Battlefield REDSEC and choose Download or Play Free. |
| Xbox Series X|S | Microsoft Store | Search for Battlefield REDSEC and choose Download or Play Free. |
- Open the supported store for your platform and find Battlefield REDSEC.
- Select Download or Play Free and allow the installation to finish.
- Launch the game and sign in with an EA Account. You need persistent internet access to play.
EA says REDSEC is free to play, while also noting optional in-game purchases and that an applicable platform account or subscription may be required. In particular, EA Help says PlayStation Plus is required to download REDSEC components, including Battleground and Gauntlet, on PlayStation systems in Germany. Requirements can therefore vary by region and platform; check the applicable store and EA’s regional requirements if access is blocked.
What REDSEC includes
EA’s current Help overview lists Battle Royale, Ranked, and Portal, and says seasonal updates add modes and maps. It also says REDSEC players can squad with Battlefield 6 players across supported platforms and REDSEC modes. For the current lineup, consult EA’s live REDSEC overview, since modes and playlists can change.

At launch on October 28, 2025, EA introduced Battle Royale, Gauntlet, and Portal. EA described the launch-era Battle Royale format as 100 players, arranged as either 25 squads of four or 50 duos, on Fort Lyndon, with destructible environments and vehicles. These are launch details, not confirmation of the current match format or mode lineup. The launch announcement is useful for understanding the original offering, while EA’s live Help page is the better source for current availability.

You can start REDSEC without Battlefield 6. EA says progress, unlocks, and settings carry over if you later buy the full game, so purchasing it is a choice rather than an access requirement.

EA’s REDSEC announcement states that players can drop in without owning the base game, while noting that an EA Account, persistent internet connection, and potentially a platform account or subscription are required. The free-to-play label does not mean every regional or platform access condition is identical.
