You can get the original Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007) through its Steam store page for Windows. Steam also lists a legacy macOS version, but warns that it is not compatible with macOS 10.15 Catalina or later. That rules it out as a supported download for current macOS systems.
Download the original 2007 game on Windows
Use the Steam listing titled Call of Duty® 4: Modern Warfare® (2007), developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision. It is the original game, not a later Modern Warfare release or Modern Warfare Remastered. Steam lists both single-player and multiplayer.
- Open the Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Steam page and confirm the listing is the 2007 game.
- Sign in to Steam or create an account, then use the store page’s purchase option if the game is available in your region.
- Install or open the Steam client, find the game in your Library, and select Install. Choose a drive with at least 8 GB of free space, the minimum listed by Steam for the game.
Steam’s game listing gives Windows XP/Vista and DirectX 9.0c among its minimum requirements, along with older-generation processor and graphics specifications. These are the game’s published minimums, not a promise that it will run on every present-day Windows setup. The Steam client has separate requirements: Steam says its client supports Windows 10 or later from January 1, 2024. Do not confuse that client requirement with the game’s listed operating-system minimum.
Can you download and play it on a Mac?
Steam’s listing includes legacy Mac requirements: macOS 10.12 Sierra, an Intel Core 2 Duo, 1 GB of RAM, and 8 GB of storage plus a 1 GB swap file, alongside older graphics hardware. However, Steam displays this warning: “Notice: This product is not compatible with macOS 10.15 Catalina or above.” The listed requirements therefore do not make it a supported option on Catalina or any later macOS release.

The Steam client also has its own compatibility limits: Steam says it no longer supports macOS 10.14 or lower or 32-bit games from February 15, 2024. Those client notices are separate from the game’s requirements; together with the product warning, they mean the Steam listing is not a reliable current-Mac download route. Current Mac App Store availability for the original game is not established here, so check the Mac App Store directly rather than assuming it offers the title. Compatibility layers and player reports are not official support.
Which version should you look for?
| What you want | What the listing establishes | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Original game on Windows | Steam lists the 2007 title for Windows, with single-player and multiplayer. | Older published minimums do not guarantee operation on a particular modern PC; check the store listing and your system before installing. |
| Original game on macOS | Steam lists legacy Mac requirements and explicitly says it is incompatible with macOS 10.15 Catalina or later. | Do not treat it as a supported download for current macOS. Current Mac App Store availability is not confirmed. |
| A later Modern Warfare game or remaster | These are different products from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007). | Check the full title and release details before downloading so you do not buy or install the wrong game. |
Release details and optional companion
Steam gives the original game’s release date as November 12, 2007, and identifies Infinity Ward as its developer and Activision as its publisher. Activision’s release announcement also mentioned the BradyGames Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Official Strategy Guide, describing it as available through electronics, book, and software retailers at the time. That historical announcement does not establish that the guide is currently in stock, and it is not needed to install or play the game.
