The Dungeons & Dragons Player’s Handbook (5.5e) is the revised fifth-edition core rulebook released in 2024—not a wholly new edition. It gives players the rules and options to build characters and play, while groups can continue using their 2014 material where they choose. Here’s what the book contains, what Wizards of the Coast says changed, and how to think about choosing between the two versions.
What is the 2024 Player’s Handbook?
Wizards of the Coast names the product Player’s Handbook (5.5e) and describes it as an improved guide for fifth edition. The publisher framed the 2024 core rulebooks as updates to fifth edition, shaped by player feedback, rather than a replacement edition that makes earlier books unusable. The book is a player-facing core rules reference for creating characters and taking part in a D&D game. Wizards’ announcement explains the update, and the official product listing uses the 5.5e name.
The publisher announced wide release for September 17, 2024. In the United States and Canada, local game stores were permitted to sell it starting September 3, 2024. Wizards’ release announcement gives those dates.
What’s in the book?
The 384-page handbook covers the core player tasks: learning the game, creating a character, choosing equipment, and using spells and other player options. Its contents include revised classes; reworked backgrounds, species, and feats; Weapon Mastery; expanded guidance on playing; and a Rules Glossary that gathers rules definitions. Wizards also highlights more than 100 pages of spells. The publisher’s 2024 handbook overview and product listing describe the book and its features.

What changed from the 2014 handbook?
The most useful way to understand the 2024 book is as a revised rules set with updated player choices and guidance, not as a separate game that requires abandoning every earlier book. Wizards specifically points to revised classes, reworked backgrounds, species, and feats, Weapon Mastery, expanded play guidance, a Rules Glossary, and more than 100 pages of spells. These are publisher-highlighted features; they do not by themselves establish that every option or rule differs from its 2014 counterpart. See the publisher’s overview for its feature descriptions.
For a table deciding whether to use the revised book, the practical question is which rules and character options the group wants to use together. D&D Beyond labels some 2014 options as legacy material and continues to provide access to purchased 2014 content. That means older options remain relevant, but players should not assume that every 2014 and 2024 rule or option is interchangeable without checking how their group handles it. The D&D Beyond changelog documents legacy labeling and continued access.

Can you keep using 2014 material?
Yes. The existence of the 2024 handbook does not require a group to switch editions or discard books it already owns. D&D Beyond says purchased 2014 material remains accessible and distinguishes legacy material in its listings. A group can decide whether to use the 2014 rules, adopt the revised handbook, or allow selected older options under agreed table rules. Check compatibility and any needed adjustments option by option rather than treating the two books as identical. D&D Beyond’s changelog is the publisher-platform reference for its legacy-material handling.
Physical or digital: which should you choose?
The official marketplace lists both physical and digital formats. Choose based on how you expect to use the book: a physical copy is a table-ready reference, while a digital copy can be accessed through the platform where it is sold. Confirm the specific format and included access on the retailer’s current listing before purchase.

Wizards has issued corrections and clarifications for the 2024 Player’s Handbook. D&D Beyond says corrections have been applied to its digital text and appear in recent printings; it also provides a downloadable PDF. If a rule seems inconsistent between a first printing and the digital version, consult the current D&D Beyond changelog and errata rather than assuming the earliest printed wording is current.
