Yuji Horii was reported as connecting more revealing designs with higher age ratings. But the viral account of a separate exchange involving series figures was later challenged by the speakers’ own program, which said its remarks had been mistranslated and clipped. The controversy is real; a definitive, single explanation for every design change is not established.
What changed in the remake?
Contemporaneous coverage described some character costume designs in the remake as more modest than earlier versions. It also reported that the protagonist’s gender-selection labels changed from “male” and “female” to “Type 1” and “Type 2.” Those are visible changes, regardless of how the later dispute over translated remarks is resolved.

Square Enix describes the game as a revival of the 1988 RPG, using pixel-art characters against 3D backgrounds. It released in Japan on November 14, 2024, for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and Microsoft Store on Windows; the Steam release followed on November 15. The Japanese listing assigns it CERO B, for ages 12 and up. Square Enix’s Japanese release listing credits Yuji Horii with scenario and game design, Akira Toriyama with character design, and ArtDink and Square Enix’s Asano Team with development.
What was Horii reported to say about age ratings?
In an October 1, 2024 report from Tokyo Game Show, Nintendo Life attributed to Horii the question, “I really wonder, who’s even complaining about this?” The outlet also reported that he linked greater costume exposure to the possibility of a higher age rating, which could make an all-ages release harder. These are secondary reports of a translated exchange, not an authoritative transcript. Nintendo Life’s account of Horii’s remarks supports saying that ratings were one explanation he was reported to give. It does not establish that a regulator ordered the edits, that the ESRB was involved, or that ratings explain every design decision.

The CERO B classification is a concrete fact about the Japanese release, not proof of what another ratings board would have assigned to an alternative design. Nor does the classification establish why the development team made each change. It should not be treated as confirmation that any particular costume or label was required by a rating authority.
Why did the viral account become disputed?
Nintendo Life’s October 3 coverage reported that the speakers’ program, KosoKoso Hōsō Kyoku, objected to the English interpretation of its discussion. In particular, the program said “Puritan” had been mistranslated as “sex education.” It also objected to remarks being selectively clipped and presented apart from their context. Nintendo Everything’s English rendering of the broader statement offers additional context, but it too is a translation of a Japanese statement, not an independently verified verbatim English transcript. The available record therefore does not support repeating the viral English version of Kazuhiko Torishima’s remarks as settled wording.
This correction changes how the exchange should be described; it does not erase the documented costume and label changes, or the separate age-rating comment attributed to Horii. The sound conclusion is narrower than either side’s most confident claims: the English account was disputed by the program, and the evidence does not prove one motive behind all the design decisions.

Is this a regional censorship difference?
There is no basis here for describing the remake as having different content by region or platform. Square Enix’s FAQ says game content is the same across platform versions, while rendering specifications vary with hardware. It also notes a free Switch 2 compatibility update with clearer graphics, smoother display, and frame-rate-priority or graphics-priority settings; the publisher says that update does not change the story or available items. Those are platform and rendering details, not evidence about the original costume decisions. Square Enix’s FAQ covers those distinctions.
