Project Rene is not EA’s stated replacement for The Sims 4 or its next deep single-player Sims game. EA describes Rene as a separate, social multiplayer experience, while saying it will keep updating The Sims 4 and that single-player PC and console games remain part of the franchise’s future. EA president Laura Miele’s reported explanation for not starting over is that players would lose years of purchased content and creations.
Why EA says it is not starting over with The Sims 5
EA president Laura Miele has pointed to player investment in The Sims 4 as a reason a reset would be unwelcome. In a Variety interview, as reported by GamesRadar+, Miele said EA had released over 85 content packs during the preceding ten years. She argued that players would have to leave purchased content and their own creations behind if they had to begin again.

“Resetting that is not player friendly and not a good idea for our community,” Miele said, according to GamesRadar’s account of the interview. She also said she would not want players to “have to start from day zero.” Those comments explain her stated concern about continuity; they do not establish every factor behind EA’s franchise plans.
What Project Rene is—and is not
In its January 9, 2026 update, EA describes Project Rene as having evolved to focus on social multiplayer play. The company says it is separate from The Sims 4 and from any future deep single-player life simulation. EA has not presented Rene as a numbered sequel, a Sims 4 replacement, or the next single-player game.

What EA says about The Sims’ single-player future
EA’s January 9, 2026 announcement describes a family of Sims experiences across PC, console, and mobile, each with its own focus. It says single-player life simulation remains a foundation and that The Sims 4 will continue to receive content and updates. EA also states: “Single-player PC and console experiences will always be a part of our future, with more than half of our global development team dedicated to The Sims 4 and the next evolution.”
The statement signals that EA plans to continue single-player Sims games, but it does not name the next project or give a launch window. It is not confirmation of a game officially called The Sims 5.

Why early Rene tests are not a final feature list
EA’s account of Project Rene playtesting describes a small private test in fall 2022 that explored interior design, furniture customization, and collaborative interior design on mobile and PC. Game Director Grant Rodiek called that test a small slice of a broader project, which was then in very early development. Those test activities describe development history, not a promise that the features will appear in a finished release.
EA says it will continue testing Sims products and experiences in 2026 through limited market tests and Sims Labs. Tests may use early builds or prototypes; EA cautions that ideas can change or may not move forward. A feature or project name encountered in a test therefore should not be treated as a confirmed release feature or product announcement.
