Need for Speed looks dormant, but EA has not announced that the franchise is cancelled. The clearest signs are that Need for Speed Unbound will receive no more updates or balancing changes and that Criterion, the series’ associated studio, has been moved onto Battlefield work. That points to a franchise with no visible active support or announced successor—not proof that EA has permanently retired it.
What does “dead” mean for Need for Speed?
For a game franchise, “dead” can mean three different things: its latest release has stopped receiving support, no next game is in view, or its owner has formally cancelled the series. The evidence supports the first and suggests the second; it does not establish the third.
EA’s February 3, 2025 update said Unbound would receive no further game updates or balancing changes, and that the Criterion team would join colleagues working on future Battlefield development. EA’s official update therefore marks the end of active support for that game and a clear shift in the team’s priorities.
Why the series looks dormant
Unbound’s live support ended
EA’s statement is specific: no more updates or balancing changes are planned for Unbound. That closes the door on further official gameplay support for the latest entry, but it is not itself a cancellation announcement for the wider series.

Criterion has shifted to Battlefield
EA said the Criterion team would join colleagues working on future Battlefield development. Criterion’s current official studio page identifies it as part of Battlefield Studios and lists Need for Speed Unbound, Need for Speed Heat, and Need for Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered among its games. A catalogue of past releases is not confirmation of a new project.
In July 2026, Windows Central reported that IGN journalist Phil Iwaniuk attributed to Criterion leader Coutaz the statement, “We are solely focused on Battlefield.” That report reinforces the picture of a studio focused elsewhere. It is reported commentary about Criterion’s focus, not an EA announcement that Need for Speed has been cancelled.

What EA has—and has not—committed to
In 2023, EA’s Vince Zampella said most of Criterion would work alongside Battlefield teams while a core group focused on what was next for Need for Speed. That statement is useful historical context, but it is not a current staffing update or a promise of a new release. EA’s later 2025 update describes the team joining Battlefield development.
As of October 8, 2026, the cited statements establish neither a Need for Speed successor nor a return date, and they do not establish a formal cancellation. The most accurate description is that the franchise is dormant or shelved in practice: its latest game’s support has ended, and its associated studio is focused on Battlefield. EA could still assign a future entry to another team or revisit the series later, but no such plan is confirmed here.

Is there evidence that Need for Speed failed commercially?
The statements cited here do not provide recent Need for Speed sales, active-player, or revenue figures. Without series-specific numbers, it would be misleading to treat EA’s staffing decision as proof that the games failed commercially—or to infer the franchise’s performance from EA-wide results or another series.

EA’s announcement concerns future updates and balancing changes for Unbound, not the availability of the listed games. Criterion’s catalogue includes Unbound, Heat, and Hot Pursuit Remastered.
