To create custom enchanted gear, gain access to the Arcane University, use the Altar of Enchanting in the Chironasium, and provide an eligible item, a sufficiently powerful filled soul gem, known applicable effects, and the displayed gold cost. These steps and mechanics are documented in the original Oblivion PC manual; the sources available do not verify that every detail is unchanged across all Remastered platforms.
Where to find the Altar of Enchanting
The Altar of Enchanting is in the Chironasium at the Arcane University in the Imperial City. The original PC manual says access to the university’s enchanting and spellmaking altars requires the appropriate Mages Guild rank. It does not specify here a single rank to quote, so check your current guild progression if the university remains inaccessible.
The manual is for the original PC game, not a Remastered-specific mechanics guide. It is the strongest source available for the altar’s location and operation, but it does not establish platform-by-platform parity in Oblivion Remastered.
What you need to enchant an item
- An eligible item: choose an item the altar lists as suitable. Different item types do not accept every effect.
- A filled soul gem: its power must be sufficient for the selected effect or effects. The interface displays the selected gem’s charge and the item’s maximum uses.
- Known, applicable effects: the altar can use effects your character knows, but only those applicable to the chosen item.
- Enough gold: the interface displays the creation cost, which you must pay to complete the enchantment.
The original manual says the soul gem used affects the maximum magnitude of constant-effect enchantments. It does not give one universal strength value; the result depends on the soul gem and effect.

How to make a custom enchantment
- Reach the Mages Guild rank needed to enter the Arcane University.
- Travel to the Chironasium in the Imperial City and activate the Altar of Enchanting.
- Select an eligible item, a filled gem with enough power, and the known effects the altar offers for that item.
- Review the displayed cost and maximum uses, then pay the gold cost to create the item.
Item enchanting is different from spellmaking: spellmaking combines known effects into a spell your character can cast; the enchanting altar applies effects to suitable weapons, armor, or clothing.
How to fill soul gems and recharge enchanted gear
Fill an empty soul gem
Bethesda Support says: “Empty soul gems can be filled by casting the "Soul Trap" spell on an enemy and defeating it while the spell is active.” The guidance does not provide a Remastered-specific table of gem capacities or soul strengths, so avoid assuming an exact gem hierarchy or capacity from this advice alone.

Recharge a depleted weapon or staff
Weapons and staves use charge and need recharging when depleted. Use a filled soul gem to recharge them; the original manual also describes recharge services from Mages Guild members and Varla Stones as alternatives. Armor and clothing are constant-effect enchantments according to that manual, so they do not need recharging.
Custom altar enchantments and Sigil Stones
A Sigil Stone is another way to obtain enchanted gear: the original manual says selecting one from inventory produces an enchanted item. At the altar, by contrast, you choose a suitable item and known applicable effects, subject to the gem’s power and the gold cost. The available sources do not establish a numerical efficiency comparison between the two methods.

If the enchanting menu freezes
Bethesda published a support note dated June 11, 2025, saying an enchanting-menu freeze issue was resolved in an update. The note does not establish the current patch number or the precise rollout history on each platform. If the menu still freezes, Bethesda advises restarting the game; on PC, temporarily remove mods or verify the game files if the problem continues.

Bethesda’s Remastered beginner article, dated April 22, 2025, lists Xbox Series X|S, Game Pass, PlayStation 5, and PC, and notes included DLC such as Wizard’s Tower. It does not document enchanting rules or establish that the DLC changes altar access. The mechanics above should therefore be read as documented original-game guidance rather than a guarantee about every Remastered build.
