Independent studio emptyvessel has partnered with NC America to publish DEFECT, its debut game. Announced March 11, 2026, the deal is intended to help the developer support multiplayer while it continues work on single-player gameplay. The cyberpunk tactical shooter is in development, with no release date announced.
What is DEFECT?
DEFECT is a first-person cyberpunk “SWAT sim” set in humanity’s last city, ruled by THE SYSTEM, an authoritarian AI. Its factions include the system’s police force, rogue police, and gangs. The store description gives examples of missions such as smuggling weapons, assassinating targets, and arresting suspects.
NC America describes it as a close-quarters, team-based, objective-driven shooter. Those descriptions come from the publisher and store listing; they are not a substitute for a hands-on assessment of how the game plays.
Which modes are announced?
The announced feature descriptions span solo, cooperative, and competitive play. NC America says the game includes single-player training or offline play and cooperative 4v4v4v4 PvP squads; Steam lists single-player, online co-op, and online PvP. The publisher says its agreement will give emptyvessel resources to support multiplayer while developing new single-player gameplay.

Who is making and publishing the game?
emptyvessel is an independent studio based in Austin, Texas, and DEFECT is its first project. NCSOFT said in May 2025 that it had made a strategic equity investment in the studio. In describing emptyvessel, NCSOFT cited founders with experience at Activision, Disney, id Software, Microsoft, and Naughty Dog; that background is the company’s characterization, not an independent measure of the game’s quality.
The publisher relationship was announced by NC America on March 11, 2026. The announcement says the partnership supports multiplayer development alongside new single-player work. The distinction matters: the announcement names NC America as publishing partner, while the Steam listing reviewed October 8, 2026 still identifies emptyvessel as publisher.

When does DEFECT release, and where?
There is no announced release date. Steam currently says “To be announced” and that the game is not yet available. NC America says the deal covers multiple platforms but does not identify them in its announcement. It names Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG.com as wishlist destinations; that alone does not confirm all three as launch platforms. Steam is the available PC store listing.
In October 2025, emptyvessel showed two trailers containing in-game footage during the Galaxies Autumn show. This was a gameplay reveal, not a review or a report based on hands-on testing.
