Yes, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is real—and it is no longer a rumor. Bethesda and Xbox released it on April 22, 2025, for Xbox Series X|S, PC, cloud and PlayStation 5. A Nintendo Switch 2 version followed on August 11, 2026. Bethesda describes it as a remaster, not a remake: the original game remains at its core, with updated visuals and gameplay refinements.

Is the Oblivion remaster real?

Yes. Bethesda and Xbox officially announced and released The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered on April 22, 2025. Bethesda’s current game page also lists a Nintendo Switch 2 version, released August 11, 2026. The old “rumors heat up” framing is now historical; the project is a released game.

In the days before the announcement, Windows Central reported on April 21, 2025, that Bethesda had teased an announcement for the following day and described the project as long-rumored. Speculation that it might launch immediately was unconfirmed at the time. The available official sources establish the announcement and release, but not the full provenance or chronology of every earlier leak, so individual leak claims should not be treated as confirmed facts. Windows Central’s April 21 report captures what was known just before the reveal.

When did Oblivion Remastered come out?

The remaster launched on April 22, 2025, for Xbox Series X|S, PC, cloud and PlayStation 5. Xbox Wire said it was available through Game Pass at launch and supported Xbox Play Anywhere. Bethesda announced the Switch 2 release date on June 30, 2026; the version arrived on August 11, 2026.

Is it a remake or a remaster?

Bethesda calls it a remaster. The studio says development began in 2021 and that its goal was to preserve the original game’s identity while bringing it up to date. Bethesda Game Studios put the distinction this way at launch: “We never wanted to remake it – but remaster it – where the original game was there as you remember playing it, but seen through today’s technology.” Bethesda’s launch message.

The original game’s core and gameplay logic remain, while Unreal Engine 5 supplies the new visual layer. Virtuos Executive Producer Alex Mur-phy described the approach in Bethesda’s extended look: “Oblivion is the heart and soul of the Remaster.” Bethesda’s extended look.
