For a forgiving first playthrough, a Strength build with a dependable weapon and enough Vigor is the safest all-round pick; for players who want faster kills and are comfortable managing status effects, Bleed is a strong alternative. This ranking focuses on PvE, weighting survivability, how soon a setup becomes practical, execution difficulty and adaptability—not a claim that one build wins every matchup. It includes base-game and Shadow of the Erdtree options, with expansion-dependent equipment labeled.
How to use this ranking
These are build archetypes, not twenty fixed level-150 stat sheets. Your level, starting class, weapon requirements and preferred gear all change the right allocation. Raise the attributes needed to equip your weapon or cast your spells, then invest in the main damage stat and survivability. Bandai Namco’s advanced-stats guide recommends at least 40 Vigor and says 60 can be worthwhile once other stats are where they need to be. Those are reference points, not mandatory targets for every character.
Weapons gain scaling bonuses from specified attributes, and the returns from Strength, Dexterity and spellcasting stats have soft caps. Two-handing a weapon applies a 1.5× Strength modifier for the purpose of meeting requirements and scaling. The useful lesson is to build around the weapon or spell set you actually use rather than spreading levels across every damage stat.
The ranking favors builds that are comparatively forgiving and come online without demanding a narrow late-game setup. It is editorial judgment, not an official ranking or a measured comparison. Patch 1.17, published by Bandai Namco on August 27, 2026, is the latest balance information covered here. Its changes specifically affect throwing weapons, the Carian Sorcery Sword, perfume bottles, shields, parrying and several spells. The patch notes say the update is required for online play.
The 20 best Elden Ring PvE builds, ranked
1. Strength greatsword
Core: Strength-first attributes, a reliable greatsword such as the Lordsworn’s Greatsword, and a straightforward melee skill. Keep Vigor high before pushing damage stats far beyond your weapon’s needs.
Progression and access: A practical early-to-late-game archetype; the cited September 2026 starter guide uses the Champion with the Lordsworn’s Greatsword as its Strength example. No expansion is required. Choose a weapon whose requirements you meet, and use a shield or two-hand the sword according to the encounter.
Why it ranks first: It is easy to understand, can stagger many enemies and does not depend on a status effect, spell rotation or rare expansion item. Its slower attacks still require timing, especially against quick bosses.
2. Bloodhound’s Fang Dexterity build
Core: Dexterity-led melee with Bloodhound’s Fang; meet the weapon’s requirements before specializing further. A modest secondary investment can support its mixed scaling, but avoid diluting Vigor and the main damage stat.
Progression and access: The September 2026 starter guide identifies Bloodhound’s Fang as an early archetype that can carry into endgame. Base game; no expansion required. The weapon skill offers mobility as well as damage, so learn its recovery and timing rather than using it indiscriminately.
Why it ranks second: It pairs a strong melee game plan with a useful skill and avoids the setup burden of more specialized builds. Its committed attacks can be punished if mistimed.
3. Samurai katana Dexterity
Core: Dexterity and a katana such as the Samurai’s Uchigatana, with a compatible skill and optional shield. Keep the build centered on Dexterity unless a chosen weapon or spell gives you a clear reason to invest elsewhere.
Progression and access: The Samurai starter example uses the Uchigatana; the class is a starting choice, not a requirement. This is a base-game route available from the beginning. A second katana is optional, not necessary to make the archetype work.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why it ranks third: It is immediately legible and flexible: attack openings with quick strikes, then use a shield or reposition when needed. Status buildup can add pressure, but the build does not have to depend on it.
4. Strength guard-counter build
Core: Strength, Vigor and Endurance for a shield-and-melee setup, using a shield with a guard boost suited to your equipment load and a weapon that can punish after a block. The exact shield and weapon are a matter of requirements and preference.
Progression and access: Base-game equipment can support this approach; no expansion is required. It is easier to use when stamina and equipment load leave room to block, attack and reposition. Patch 1.17 increased guard boost on numerous shields, with some also losing weight, so check your current version’s item behavior rather than relying on older advice.
Why it ranks fourth: Blocking can make enemy attack patterns easier to read, and guard counters give defense an immediate response. It is less effective against attacks that drain stamina heavily or punish passive blocking.
5. Bleed and Arcane
Core: Arcane and the requirements of a weapon that builds Blood Loss, with enough Vigor to survive while you apply pressure. A Dexterity/Arcane split can suit weapons that scale with both; prioritize the scaling of the specific weapon rather than assuming all Bleed weapons benefit identically.
Progression and access: This can become effective once you have a suitable weapon and the attributes to use it. Base-game options exist, so the build does not require Shadow of the Erdtree. It is less reliable against enemies resistant or immune to Blood Loss.
Why it ranks fifth: Status buildup can reward sustained offense, but the build’s results depend on the enemy and on maintaining opportunities to attack. It is more specialized than the top four.
6. Blasphemous Blade Strength/Faith
Core: Meet the Blasphemous Blade’s requirements, then support its Strength/Faith scaling and skill; keep enough Vigor for close-range combat. Pair the weapon with only the incantations or support tools you will actually use.

It is most appropriate once the weapon is available and your stats can support it.
Why it ranks sixth: The weapon skill gives the build a clear ranged-leaning attack option alongside melee, making it more adaptable than a pure close-range setup. Its ranking reflects availability later in progression, not a claim of fixed damage superiority.
7. Intelligence sorcery
Core: Intelligence, a staff whose requirements and scaling fit your progression, and a compact spell selection for different ranges or enemy openings. Keep Vigor in the plan; a caster is not automatically safer at a distance.
Progression and access: Base game, no expansion required. This archetype becomes more complete as you acquire spells and an appropriate staff. Spell requirements and availability vary, so build around what you have instead of copying a late-game spell list at the start.
Why it ranks seventh: Range and spell choice offer flexibility, but resource management, casting windows and enemy pressure make it less forgiving than a simple melee build.
8. Moonveil Intelligence/Dexterity
Core: Moonveil with the attributes needed to wield it and an emphasis on Intelligence and Dexterity according to its scaling. Use melee when safe and its weapon skill when an opening allows; do not neglect Vigor to chase damage.
Progression and access: Base-game weapon; no expansion required. It is a mid-progression option rather than a guaranteed starting setup. The September 2026 starter guide calls this archetype Moonveil Shinobi.
Why it ranks eighth: It combines a melee weapon with a distinctive skill, so it has more than one way to handle an opening. That flexibility comes with a narrower weapon identity than the builds ranked above it.
9. Faith incantation caster
Core: Faith, an appropriate seal, and incantations selected for the damage types or support effects you need. Keep a weapon option for situations where casting is unsafe, and invest in Vigor as well as spell damage.
Progression and access: Base-game archetype; no expansion required. The range of spells gives room to adapt, but the exact set depends on availability, requirements and the encounter. This is not a single universal spell loadout.
Why it ranks ninth: Faith supports a flexible casting-centered playstyle, but spell selection and casting opportunities raise its execution burden compared with direct melee.
10. Colossal Strength
Core: Strength, Vigor and enough Endurance for a heavy weapon and armor setup. Use a Colossal weapon that fits your requirements; two-handing can apply the game’s 1.5× Strength modifier.

Progression and access: Base-game route, with weapon choice depending on progression. It does not require an expansion. Two-handing can help meet Strength needs, but does not remove other equipment requirements.
Why it ranks tenth: Heavy attacks can stagger enemies and make individual openings count. Slow attack recovery and stamina use make it less forgiving than a greatsword.
11. Wing of Astel Intelligence melee hybrid
Core: Wing of Astel and an Intelligence-led setup that meets its other requirements. Support it with a staff only if you intend to cast; carrying spell tools without using them wastes the build’s focus.
Progression and access: Base-game weapon, no expansion required; this is not an assumed starting weapon. Plan the build around when you obtain it and the stats you can sustain at that point.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy it ranks eleventh: It bridges melee and Intelligence play rather than committing to one, but that hybrid role asks for more deliberate stat and equipment choices than a single-stat archetype.
12. Dexterity/Faith lightning
Core: Dexterity for a fast weapon, Faith for lightning incantations, and a seal that meets the spells’ needs. Treat the melee weapon and incantations as complementary options rather than trying to maximize both at once.
Progression and access: Base-game archetype; no expansion required. Exact weapon and spell choice depend on progression and requirements. The approach calls for more attribute planning than a pure Dexterity build.
Why it ranks twelfth: It gives a quick melee character access to ranged or elemental options, but split investment and spell timing raise its setup burden.

Core: A weapon and skill that can build Frost, with the weapon’s relevant damage attributes as the main investment. Keep a direct-damage plan for enemies that do not respond well to status buildup.
Progression and access: Base-game-compatible archetype; no expansion is required. Weapon availability and scaling vary, so this describes a play pattern rather than a prescribed item or stat spread.
Why it ranks thirteenth: Frost can reward repeated hits and add a different status option to a melee toolkit. Its value depends on the enemy, and setup is less straightforward than a standard Strength or Dexterity weapon.
14. Rivers of Blood Dexterity/Arcane
Core: Rivers of Blood with the attributes required by the weapon and an emphasis on its relevant Dexterity/Arcane scaling. Keep enough Vigor to use its close-range skill without turning every exchange into a trade.

Progression and access: A later base-game option, not a starting build; no expansion required. The September 2026 starter guide includes a Sanguine Samurai example built around Dexterity, Arcane and Rivers of Blood.
Why it ranks fourteenth: It offers a focused weapon-skill and status playstyle, but is tied to a particular weapon and its availability, making it less adaptable than a general katana build.
Rank #3
15. Poison
Core: A weapon or setup that can inflict Poison, supported by the attributes its weapon scaling requires. Preserve a direct attack option for enemies where applying Poison is not practical.
Progression and access: Base-game archetype; no expansion required. The editorial candidate list includes a Poison Lizard build, but does not establish a single verified loadout or optimal stat sheet; the ranking here is for the broader Poison play pattern.
Why it ranks fifteenth: It offers a distinct status-focused approach, but relies on buildup and enemy susceptibility, so it is less universally dependable than direct damage.
16. Black Blade Faith
Core: A Faith-led build around the Black Blade weapon option, meeting its requirements and using its distinctive skill when openings permit. Retain enough Vigor and supporting attributes for the weapon’s demands.
Progression and access: Late base-game archetype; no expansion required. It is not a first-hours setup, and exact allocation depends on the level and equipment available when you reach it.
Why it ranks sixteenth: Its focused weapon identity makes it a clear endgame direction, but the late access and narrower fit for a full playthrough lower its overall place.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →17. Milady Bleed
Core: Milady with a Bleed-oriented setup, investing in its requirements and relevant scaling rather than treating every Bleed weapon as interchangeable. A compatible skill and support equipment can complete the idea.
Progression and access: Shadow of the Erdtree required. The official game page distinguishes the base game from the expansion and bundled editions; owning the base game alone does not establish access to expansion equipment.
Why it ranks seventeenth: It is an expansion-dependent variation for players who want a quicker weapon style with status pressure. Its access requirement and narrower scope make it a worse general recommendation than base-game builds above.
18. Smithscript throwing weapons
Core: A build centered on Smithscript throwing weapons, with attributes chosen for the specific weapon’s requirements and scaling. Carry a close-range fallback for situations where throwing is unsafe or ineffective.

Patch 1.17 increased the power of Smithscript throwing weapons and reduced their stamina cost, so older advice may not reflect the current version.
Why it ranks eighteenth: The patch makes this archetype worth considering, but it remains more equipment-specific and less broadly established than conventional melee or casting builds.
19. Perfume bottle build
Core: A perfume-bottle-centered setup with attributes matched to the chosen bottle and a backup weapon for encounters that disrupt its attack pattern. Do not assume all bottles share identical damage or scaling.
Progression and access: Several perfume bottles gained attack power in Patch 1.17. The relevant build may depend on expansion equipment; check the chosen bottle’s availability before planning around it. Shadow of the Erdtree is a separate expansion for applicable editions and platforms.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why it ranks nineteenth: It is an unusual, patch-sensitive playstyle with equipment-specific demands. The official patch establishes that several bottles were adjusted, not that every bottle or setup is equally strong.
20. Carian Sorcery Sword hybrid
Core: The Carian Sorcery Sword in an Intelligence-led hybrid that also meets its weapon requirements. Choose spells to complement its melee role instead of spreading attributes across every possible casting option.
Progression and access: The weapon is associated with Shadow of the Erdtree, so expansion ownership is required. Patch 1.17 changed its Intelligence scaling to increase the attack power of all damage types; older build advice may not reflect that adjustment.
Why it ranks twentieth: Its hybrid concept is appealing and the latest patch specifically changed its scaling, but expansion access and a more demanding stat plan make it a niche recommendation for this first-playthrough-weighted list.

Choose by the way you want to play
- Want the simplest route: Start with Strength greatsword, Bloodhound’s Fang or Samurai katana. All three have clear melee plans and do not require expansion equipment.
- Want to block and punish: Try the guard-counter build, accounting for stamina and shield weight. Patch 1.17 changed guard boost or weight on numerous shields.
- Want ranged options: Choose Intelligence sorcery or Faith incantations, but keep Vigor and plan around spell requirements and casting windows.
- Want status effects: Bleed/Arcane, Frost and Poison are distinct archetypes, not interchangeable damage upgrades. Enemy susceptibility and opportunities to build status affect their value.
- Own the expansion: Consider Milady, Smithscript throwing weapons, perfume bottles or the Carian Sorcery Sword only after confirming the exact item belongs to content you can access.
Content and version checks
Bandai Namco’s official Shadow of the Erdtree product information describes the expansion as adding weapons, equipment, weapon skills, magic, enemies, encounters and plotlines, and distinguishes it from the base game and bundled editions. Expansion-dependent builds above are labeled accordingly; platform and edition details matter when checking access.
Patch 1.17 also introduced the Tarnished Pack, which adds Idus Knight and Heavy Knight starting classes and additional weapons. Bandai Namco says it is included by default in the Nintendo Switch 2 Tarnished Edition; on other listed platforms it is separate paid content. None of the twenty archetypes requires one of those added starting classes, and readers should not assume the pack is included with every edition.
Candidate archetypes in this ranking draw on build examples published by PCGamesN in February 2026, a September 2026 HowToPlayHub ranking, and a September 2026 Playnesta starter guide. Their scopes differ, and the Playnesta guide attributes its details to community wiki pages. Those lists inform the selection of playstyles; they do not establish a universal ranking or fully specified optimal builds. For current balance-sensitive choices, Bandai Namco’s August 27, 2026 Patch 1.17 notes are the relevant official reference.
