The Free Trial is the exception: Square Enix says it does not require Game Pass.
Which subscriptions does paid FFXIV on Xbox require?
Square Enix says full Xbox play requires both an active Xbox Game Pass plan eligible for console online multiplayer and an active FINAL FANTASY XIV Online subscription. Xbox’s US Complete Edition listing also identifies online multiplayer as a separately sold requirement and says paid editions require an active FFXIV subscription.
The plan labels are not consistent across the official pages. Square Enix’s support FAQ and launch announcement refer to Game Pass Core or Ultimate. The current US Xbox listing names Essential, Premium, or Ultimate for the product, while its general console-multiplayer note still refers to Core or Ultimate. Check the live Xbox store and Square Enix support information for your region before buying; don’t assume an older tier name applies unchanged. Does the Free Trial need Game Pass or an FFXIV subscription?
No Game Pass plan is required for the Free Trial, according to Square Enix. The trial also avoids the paid FFXIV subscription requirement while you remain on the trial. Its content and restrictions differ from the paid game, and its scope can change; check Square Enix’s current trial information before deciding whether it includes the content you want.

What does the 30-day included play period cover?
A qualifying Starter or Complete Edition purchase includes 30 days of FFXIV play, according to Square Enix and the Xbox listing. This is a limited included period, not a permanent subscription or a waiver of Xbox’s online-multiplayer requirement.
Square Enix says the included period is available only once per platform on a single service account, and does not apply on a platform where a license has already been registered. After the included days end, you need an FFXIV subscription to continue playing the paid version. Check the listing and your account eligibility before purchasing.
