If Valiant Hearts: The Great War closes as soon as you launch it, first verify its files in the launcher where you own the game. Then restart your PC and check the game’s published requirements and your Windows version. These steps address common launch problems, but the available guidance does not establish one universal cause—especially for a specific error such as 0xc000007b.
1. Verify the game files in its storefront launcher
Ubisoft recommends file verification when a PC game crashes or will not start; the process can restore missing or corrupted files. Use the launcher that owns your installation:
- Ubisoft Connect: Open Library, select Valiant Hearts: The Great War, choose the cog beside Play, then select Verify files.
- Steam or Epic Games: Verify the installation directly in Steam or Epic, rather than using Ubisoft Connect’s verification steps. Ubisoft’s instructions explicitly distinguish games owned through those storefronts.

2. Restart the PC and check the requirements
Steam Support’s general guidance for games that close during “Preparing to Launch” is to try again after a fresh restart and compare the computer with the game’s requirements. This is broad troubleshooting advice, not a diagnosis specific to Valiant Hearts. Steam also cautions that a PC at or near a game’s minimum requirements may have launch or performance problems.

Check your PC’s processor, memory and graphics hardware against the listing rather than assuming a newer Windows version guarantees that every configuration will work. Steam’s general guidance is at Steam Support: games do not run after “Preparing to Launch”; the title’s specifications are on its Steam store page.

3. Account for the Windows compatibility note
Steam says the game was originally released for Windows 7 and can be played on Windows 10 and Windows 11. The game’s release date on the listing is June 25, 2014. That OS note is a storefront compatibility statement, not a guarantee that every Windows installation, driver setup or launcher configuration will work.
4. Treat Ubisoft Connect reinstall advice as an anecdotal lead
A Steam Community discussion includes a Windows 11 player reporting error 0xc000007b. One participant said installing Ubisoft Connect before installing the game let them launch it; another reported that reinstalling and verifying did not resolve their problem. These are individual reports with mixed outcomes, not a confirmed fix or official Ubisoft procedure. If you consider reinstalling or updating Ubisoft Connect, follow its current official guidance and do not assume the same sequence will solve your crash. 5. Record what happens if it still will not launch
The available sources do not identify a single cause for startup crashes in this game. Before contacting the relevant platform or Ubisoft support, note the details that distinguish one case from another:
- The exact error message or code, including whether it is 0xc000007b.
- Where you own and launch the game: Ubisoft Connect, Steam or Epic Games.
- Your Windows version.
- When the failure occurs: before the game window appears, while the launcher is starting it, or after a window opens.
- Your PC’s relevant specifications and whether they meet the Steam listing’s requirements.
That information helps separate a game-file problem from a launcher failure, a named error or a system-specific compatibility issue without treating one player’s report as a universal explanation.
