What’s actually slowing this PC down?

If Football Manager 2024 crashes on a Windows PC, start by identifying whether it fails at launch, shows a specific error, or crashes after reaching the menu or a save. Then work through reversible checks one at a time: verify the PC meets the requirements, temporarily remove add-ons, move the game’s cache or preferences, verify its files, and check drivers and software conflicts. No single step is a guaranteed fix for every cause.
First identify when FM24 crashes
Note what happens and copy any exact error text before changing files. A game that never opens, a crash dump, a named launch error, and a crash during play can have different causes. SEGA’s launch-crash guide links separate remedies for errors involving essential data, Steam API initialization, locked content files, and installation problems. Follow the remedy for the error you actually see rather than trying unrelated fixes.
If FM24 reaches the menu but crashes while loading or playing a save, record that detail too. The steps below are primarily SEGA’s guidance for launch failures; testing add-ons and user data can still help isolate a configuration problem, but a launch-error remedy may not address an in-game crash.
Check whether your PC meets FM24’s minimum requirements
Steam’s Football Manager 2024 listing gives these minimum Windows requirements (listing accessed 2026):

#1 Best Overall
| Component | Minimum listed requirement |
|---|---|
| Operating system | 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 |
| Processor | Intel Core 2 or AMD Athlon 64 X2 |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM |
| Graphics | DirectX 11 graphics with 256 MB VRAM |
| Storage | 7 GB available space |
These are minimums, not a guarantee of smooth performance. Steam notes that performance scales with higher-end systems. SEGA also cautions that newer Football Manager editions may require more than older ones; if the PC is old or you are unsure about compatibility, send support your DxDiag report and any crash dump.
Try reversible fixes in order
After each step, launch the game and check whether the symptom has changed. Change one thing at a time so you can identify what helped. SEGA’s official troubleshooting sequence covers add-ons, cache and preferences, game files, drivers, conflicting programs, antivirus interference, and the Sports Interactive data folder.

1. Temporarily move custom files and add-ons
Move custom graphics, logos, skins, editor files, and other additions out of their folders, then try to launch FM24. Treat this as a diagnostic test, not a reason to assume community content is inherently faulty. If the game starts, restore items selectively and test again to find a possible conflict.
2. Move the cache or preferences folder
Close the game first. On Windows 10/11, SEGA gives this location for the relevant folder: C:Users[Your Windows Username]AppDataLocalSports Interactive[Football Manager title]. Open that folder and move Preferences and/or Cache somewhere safe, such as a temporary folder on your desktop. Do not delete them: moving keeps the change reversible and lets you provide the files to support if needed.

Launch FM24 again. It will recreate folders as needed. You may have to set preferences such as display mode, sound, or autosaves again. These cache and preferences folders are separate from save games. See SEGA’s cache and preferences instructions for details.
3. Verify the game files in Steam
Use Steam’s file-verification option for Football Manager 2024, following SEGA’s linked game-file verification guidance. When verification finishes, try launching again. If you have a named error, use its specific linked remedy in the same SEGA guide rather than relying on file verification alone.

4. Check graphics drivers and software conflicts
SEGA recommends checking graphics drivers, then checking for programs known to interfere with Football Manager or Steam, and whether antivirus software is interfering. Test each change separately and retry the game after each one. Do not leave antivirus protection disabled; the goal is to establish whether it is blocking the game, then restore normal protection and use an appropriate exception or contact the software provider if necessary.
5. Test with a clean Sports Interactive data folder
Back up the contents of DocumentsSports Interactive[Football Manager title] by moving them into a separate backup folder. Leave the original title folder empty, then launch the game. If it works, copy items back selectively to identify the problematic file or setting. Keep the backup until you have finished testing; this procedure moves user data temporarily and is reversible.

Use the old low-configuration suggestion only as a last diagnostic
In a 2023 community thread about a particular early-access launch issue, a Sports Interactive moderator suggested checking the graphics driver and trying the Steam launch option --config very_low. This is historical, case-specific advice—not a universal or guaranteed fix. Try it only after the official troubleshooting steps above, and remove the option if it does not help. The thread is “FM24 wont start in steam”.
Send SEGA the information needed to diagnose a persistent crash
If the game still fails, submit a support request with the exact error or symptom, your PC details, and the steps you have already tried. Include a DxDiag report and any crash dump when relevant. SEGA lists the default Windows crash-dump location as C:Users[Your Windows Username]DocumentsSports Interactive[Football Manager title]crash dumps. Keep any moved cache, preferences, or user-data backups until support has what it needs.
Similar Steam launch symptoms can have different causes; community reports are examples of individual cases, not evidence that one fix works for everyone. For instance, an October 2023 player report describes “FM 24 keeps crashing when launching via Steam” and points readers to SEGA’s launch-crash guidance: community discussion.
