Fortnite publicly addressed criticism of its Chapter 5 movement changes on December 4, 2023, asking players to give the new system time while acknowledging that the developers had also needed a few days to get used to it. Epic later announced movement adjustments on December 18. Those were separate updates, not one announcement.
What Fortnite said on December 4, 2023
In a report published that day, Insider Gaming quoted the FortniteGame account as opening its response: “Let’s talk movement. TBH, it took us a few days to get used to it during our playtests too.” The report says players had criticized Chapter 5’s new movement, including its slower running and sprinting and changed animations. The quoted post acknowledged those concerns and asked players to give the changes a chance. Insider Gaming’s December 4 report is the source for the response and its wording; the original post is not independently established here through an official Epic page.

Why Epic said it changed movement
As reproduced in the report, Fortnite described the update as introducing new animations and somewhat slower running and sprinting. The stated aims included visual improvements and encouraging more strategic decisions. The report does not provide a complete official specification or numerical speed values, so the slowdown should not be treated as a measurable percentage.
What the response did—and did not—mean
The response recognized that players were having difficulty adjusting, but it did not promise to reverse the changes. Insider Gaming also reported that PC players might need to adjust default settings. Comments selected by the outlet show some players asking for the movement to be changed back; they do not establish how the entire player community felt.

What Epic changed on December 18
Two weeks later, Epic published an official follow-up, “Fortnite Gameplay Improvements Since The Big Bang”. It announced several adjustments:
- Crouching and running speed were increased.
- Camera movement was reduced.
- The view change while sprinting was adjusted to make the experience smoother.
- Movement animations were updated to better match the speed adjustments.
Epic’s follow-up documents that it made changes after the initial response. It does not establish that any one comment caused a particular adjustment or that every player’s concerns were resolved.

Custom Diagonal Movement setting
In the same December 18 update, Epic said it had reset every player’s “Custom Diagonal Movement” settings and asked players to log in and configure the setting to their preference. That instruction applies to the dated update; it should not be taken as confirmation of the setting’s present-day state or menu path.
Did the movement changes affect Creative?
Not in the same way as Battle Royale movement speeds. Epic’s official v28.00 Ecosystem update, dated December 3, 2023, said Creative and UEFN islands adopted the new movement visuals but retained their pre-v28.00 movement speed. It also described a Hurdle Activation setting: creators could turn “Allow Hurdle” on or off in Island Settings. The speed changes discussed in this story therefore should not be generalized to every Fortnite experience.
