FragPunk is worth trying if you want a free-to-play 5v5 shooter where every round can get weird. Its Shard Cards change combat rules between rounds, creating memorable surprises that can also make matches less predictable. In a hands-on review published in March 2025, TechRadar’s Dashiell Wood found the core matches entertaining but questioned the game’s competitive consistency, side modes, and monetization. That is one dated reviewer’s assessment, not a verdict on the game’s current live-service state.
What is FragPunk?
FragPunk is a free-to-play 5v5 hero shooter built around teams fighting through a bomb-defusal format. Players choose Lancers, each with distinct abilities, and use weapons alongside Shard Cards that alter the rules of combat. The official Steam listing describes cards that can combine with or counter one another, and also lists an individual 1v1 Duel mode. Steam’s FragPunk listing
The official global launch update described Shard Clash as the main mode and listed Standard, Advanced Standard, and Ranked variants, plus rotating Battle Rotation and Arcade modes, permanent arcade options, training, custom rooms, and AI practice. Those are launch-era descriptions; rotating modes and the live selection may change. The same March 2025 update counted 13 Lancers, 19 primary and secondary weapons plus two melee types, and 169 Shard Cards at launch. These are historical launch figures, not current roster counts. How do Shard Cards work?
In Shard Clash, teams get a selection of three random cards between rounds, according to TechRadar’s account of the build its reviewer played in March 2025. Players earn Shard Points through performance, then spend them to activate cards. Effects can change movement or combat rules, while some introduce more whimsical twists. The result is that a familiar round can turn into a very different tactical problem, and teams may have to adapt rather than rely on the same plan every time. TechRadar’s March 2025 review

#1 Best Overall
- Frag is a tabletop game that simulates a "first-person shooter" experience without a computer.
- Players move their fighters across the tabletop, engaging in combat with opponents to "frag" them.
- Players navigate through blood spatters to restore their health, creating a balance between offense and defense.
- The game incorporates cards for weapons, armor, and gadgets, adding a strategic and dynamic element to the gameplay.
The mechanic is also the game’s main trade-off. Surprise combinations can make casual matches lively, but randomness can interfere with the consistency players seek from ranked or highly competitive play. Shard Cards are not a paid unlock according to the current Steam product description, which says every card is free for all players. That specific claim does not mean every other gameplay or cosmetic element is free. Steam’s FragPunk listing
What did the review get right about the fun?
Wood’s TechRadar review, first published in March 2025, praised the game-changing card mechanic and the variety of Lancer abilities. He found the short, chaotic matches more suited to relaxed play than to the steadier style associated with Counter-Strike 2 or Valorant. He reported playing for more than 15 hours on PC, making this a hands-on critic’s assessment rather than a claim about universal player experience. TechRadar’s March 2025 review
That perspective makes FragPunk easiest to recommend to players who enjoy improvisation and don’t mind a match shifting because of a card. If your priority is a stable competitive environment where consistency and balance matter above novelty, the same defining feature may be a drawback.
What are the main criticisms?
Competitive consistency and balance
TechRadar’s reviewer argued that card randomness and perceived Lancer imbalance could undermine serious competitive play. This is a single critic’s view of the March 2025 build, not evidence of current balance or a consensus among players. Live-service balance can change, and the review should be read as a dated snapshot. TechRadar’s March 2025 review
Side modes
The same review criticized Outbreak and several arcade modes. That is useful context if you are interested in the full mode lineup, but it describes one reviewer’s experience and does not establish how those modes play or rotate today. TechRadar’s March 2025 review
Monetization
Wood described the interface’s sales prompts and Lancer unlock economics as intrusive in the reviewed build. FragPunk is free-to-play, but systems, unlock paths, prices, and interface prompts may have changed since March 2025. The official release FAQ documented launch-era membership terms, including access to every Lancer while active, currencies and tokens, and a premium battle pass; that FAQ is not a reliable statement of current pricing. The official launch information lists Windows, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5, including PS5 Pro on the global launch page. A pre-launch announcement promised full crossplay at launch; platform feature parity and other cross-platform features should not be inferred from that promise. TechRadar reported keyboard-and-mouse and controller support on PC, along with colorblind color customization. The reviewer also described the broader accessibility feature set as limited and noted no dedicated accessibility menu in the build reviewed in March 2025. This was not a platform-by-platform accessibility audit. TechRadar’s March 2025 review

Is FragPunk worth playing?
For a free-to-play shooter, FragPunk’s central hook is easy to sample: the cards can make a round feel distinct, while Lancers add another layer of ability-driven play. It is a stronger fit for players who value short, unpredictable matches than for those who want every round to be governed by consistent competitive conditions.
The best evidence for how it feels comes from a single hands-on review published in March 2025. It supports a clear view of the game’s appeal and the reviewer’s criticisms at that time, but it cannot establish the current state of balance, modes, monetization, or player experience.
