Gigantamax Blastoise is a Water-type Max Battle boss, so Grass- and Electric-type attacks are the best way to exploit its weaknesses. Prioritize Gigantamax Rillaboom, with Gigantamax Toxtricity and Gigantamax Venusaur as strong alternatives. A balanced group can also assign separate attacker, defender, and healer roles, then build the Max Meter, dodge targeted attacks, and use Max moves when the team needs them.
Best counters for Gigantamax Blastoise
Grass and Electric attacks are the relevant counter types for this Water-type boss. These are comparative options, not a universal ranking across every phase of the battle. A useful team also needs Pokémon that can survive and build the meter outside the Max phase, plus support moves when the group needs healing or shielding.
Build a team with attacker, defender, and healer roles
If your group needs more than damage, assigning jobs can help it last through the battle. Pokémon GO Hub’s strategy guide recommends these support options (Gigantamax Blastoise battle guide):

- Defender: Crowned Shield Zamazenta is the guide’s recommended choice; Dynamax Suicune and Dynamax Blastoise are also listed.
- Healer: Dynamax Blissey is the first suggested healer, with Wailord, Gigantamax Snorlax, and Gigantamax Lapras as alternatives.
- Attacker: Use the strongest Grass- or Electric-type Max attackers available, prioritizing Gigantamax Rillaboom, Toxtricity, or Venusaur when you have them.
These are team-building recommendations rather than mandatory roles. Choose support Pokémon when the group needs survivability or recovery; if your team is already holding up, focus on attackers that can contribute the appropriate Max damage.
Blastoise’s weakness and moves
Blastoise is Water type, making Grass and Electric attacks its weaknesses. Do not assume every attack it uses will be Water type: the specialist guide lists Water Gun and Bite as possible Fast Attacks, and Hydro Cannon, Flash Cannon, Ice Beam, Hydro Pump, and Skull Bash as Charged Attacks. Hydro Cannon is a legacy move (Pokémon GO Hub move list).

Because the boss can use moves outside its own type, watch for its targeting cue and dodge rather than relying on a Pokémon’s resistance to Water attacks alone.
Battle tactics: build energy, dodge, and use Max moves
- Use attacks to fill the Max Meter. Continue attacking between Max phases so your team can reach its transformation and Max moves.
- Swipe to collect energy icons. When icons appear, collect them to help fill the meter.
- Dodge when Blastoise targets your Pokémon. Use the warning to avoid taking the incoming attack.
- Choose the Max move your team needs. Gigantamax Pokémon can use their G-Max move, Max Spirit to heal, and Max Guard to shield. Prioritize healing or shielding when your group needs support; otherwise, use the available damage option.
- Cheer if all your Pokémon faint. You can still help teammates by cheering, which fills their Max Meters faster.

Gigantamax battle limits and entry
Only Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon can enter a Max Battle. The Gigantamax-specific Pokémon GO Help Center page says a Trainer may bring up to three Max Pokémon, and that up to 20 Trainers may participate. Fainted Pokémon do not recover until the battle ends (Pokémon GO Help Center: Gigantamax Pokémon).
Pokémon GO Hub’s April 2026 guide gives an estimate of 15–40 players for the battle, but that is a guide estimate, not the official participant cap. The current Gigantamax-specific Help Center limit is the more relevant figure for planning a group. A general Pokémon GO Max Battles page gives a higher figure for Gigantamax battles, so it should not be used as the specific current cap when the dedicated Help Center page states 20.

The specialist guide lists an entry cost of 800 Max Particles and says they are consumed only on victory. The cited official Help Center page does not specify this cost for Blastoise; check the in-game lobby for the entry details shown for your battle (Pokémon GO Hub guide).
When Gigantamax Blastoise is available
Gigantamax Blastoise debuted in six-star Max Battles during the GO Bigger event on October 26–27, 2024 (Pokémon GO event announcement). A subsequent return date is not established here, so check the in-game event schedule for current availability rather than assuming it is active.
Optional damage boost
A Max Mushroom can boost damage. The general Pokémon GO Help Center says its effect lasts 30 minutes, though it may last longer during special events (Pokémon GO Help Center: Max Mushrooms).
