Reporting describes Episode 3-related files and a weapon model—not a playable Half-Life 3 or Episode 3 build.
What the archive revealed about Half-Life 3
Ars Technica reported on August 30, 2026, that a purported Steam2 content-server archive contained more than 12 TB of Steam material spanning 2003 to 2013. That figure describes the size of the archive, not the amount of Half-Life 3 content in it. Ars Technica’s report says the archive did not include a playable depot labeled “Half-Life 3 confirmed.”

Ars reported that data trawlers found files labeled “ep3” that seemed related to the long-delayed Episode 3. A later review by VGTimes described an Episode 3-related weapon model, while noting that no playable Episode 3 build had been found in the parsed archive. TechSpot likewise identified the model as one previously shown in official Valve documentary footage about the canceled Half-Life 2: Episode 3. An old asset or filename is not evidence of a new sequel.
How to judge the claims
The important distinction is between material present in an old archive and evidence of a current game project. The coverage supports these separate categories:
#1 Best Overall
- New weapons; new levels; solve a variety of puzzles; first-person shooter
| Claim or material | What the reporting says |
|---|---|
| Playable Half-Life 3 | Ars Technica reported no playable “Half-Life 3 confirmed” depot in the archive; VGTimes said no confirmed Half-Life 3 material had turned up in its parsed contents. Ars Technica; VGTimes. |
| Episode 3-related files | Ars reported “ep3” data files seemingly related to Episode 3; that description does not establish a playable build or a new Half-Life game. Ars Technica. |
| Episode 3 weapon model | VGTimes described a weapon model and said no playable Episode 3 build was in the archive. TechSpot connected the model to footage about the canceled Episode 3. VGTimes; TechSpot. |
To assess any further claim, ask whether the evidence is an identifiable item in the archive or an inference from a filename; whether it belongs to the 2003–2013 Steam2 period or is tied to current development; whether it is a playable build, an asset, or only a reference; and whether Valve or another accountable primary source has confirmed the interpretation. The cited coverage does not provide Valve confirmation.
Why the archive is old—and what remains unclear
Ars describes the archive as Steam2-era content for games distributed on Steam between 2003 and 2013, including public releases and prerelease or prototype versions. Valve transitioned from Steam2 to SteamPipe in 2013, which accounts for the archive’s time boundary. Its age makes it poor evidence, by itself, of what Valve may be developing now.
Rank #2
- Amazing new graphics with pre-rendered cutscenes that look like they came from the movies
- More realistic physics - Objects have varied and appropriate mass, density and physical properties
- Incredibly advanced AI as enemies adapt, plan, improvise, and respond
- Hordes of new aliens and other enemies, plus a plethora of new guns and weapons
The archive’s provenance is not fully resolved in the reporting. Ars quoted dataminer Gabe Follower as saying the material came through a publicly accessible API endpoint, but also noted uncertainty over whether it was accessed recently or privately archived earlier. That is the dataminer’s account, not an official explanation from Valve. Ars Technica
What Valve has said
VGTimes reported in September 2026 that Valve had not publicly commented on the archive as of its report. That is a dated status, not confirmation of what Valve has said since, and silence does not establish whether a Half-Life 3 project exists. VGTimes

Why the rumor keeps resurfacing
Half-Life 3 speculation has a long history of rumors, hoaxes, and alleged leaks. A PC Gamer retrospective published through Steam News in 2016 documents that history; it provides context for why isolated code references or assets need verification, not evidence about this archive or a current project.
