Reports in 2025 described datamined game data and insider claims about a project believed by some to be Half-Life 3. The reveal and launch windows floated that year passed without confirmation. A July 2026 report relayed further claims, including that the project was no longer tied to Steam Machine, but those claims also remain unofficial.
What is confirmed—and what is not?
Valve’s public games and company page lists Half-Life: Alyx and earlier Half-Life titles. It also says some games in development remain secret, but it does not name Half-Life 3 or HLX. That establishes what Valve has publicly listed, not whether an undisclosed project exists.

HLX is a reported code name, not an official public title. Gaming coverage and dataminer Tyler McVicker have treated it as a possible next Half-Life project, but Valve has not confirmed that identification. Keep three different claims separate: game-file changes can be observed; what those changes mean is interpretation; and reports about playtesting or launch plans depend on sources outside Valve.
How the Half-Life 3 rumors developed
| Date | What was reported | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| January 2, 2025 | Heise reported claims that friends and family of Valve staff were privately testing Project HLX. It also covered a year-end video from G-Man voice actor Mike Shapiro that fans read as a tease. | The private-testing claim was not a Valve announcement. Heise noted that the video’s scenery did not clearly resemble Half-Life and appeared to come from Shapiro’s song artwork, so it is not reliable evidence of a game tease. Heise’s report |
| February 26, 2025 | Ars Technica reported new variables and strings found in Valve game updates. McVicker interpreted them as signs HLX could be in late-stage optimization and polish. | The data changes were reported; their connection to Half-Life 3 and what they meant for development stage were McVicker’s interpretation. Ars Technica’s report |
| May 5, 2025 | McVicker said the project was playable end-to-end, being optimized and polished, and not a VR title. He suggested a summer announcement and winter release as possibilities while acknowledging the timing was guesswork. | These were reported claims, not an official status update or schedule. Insider Gaming also cautioned that the information was unofficial. VGC’s report · Insider Gaming’s report |
| November 14, 2025 | ComicBook.com reported that GabeFollower said Valve was still targeting a reveal before year-end; McVicker separately thought a reveal might come within two weeks. | These were predictions attributed to commentators, not an announcement. ComicBook.com’s report |
| December 16, 2025 | Ars Technica reported Mike Straw’s claim, based on anonymous sources, that Half-Life 3 was still expected to launch with Steam Machine in spring 2026. The report noted that earlier dates Straw had heard had passed. | Both the launch window and hardware link were rumors; the missed earlier dates are a reason not to treat the new window as a commitment. Ars Technica’s report |
| July 6, 2026 | abit.ee relayed McVicker’s claims that some elements did not meet Valve’s standards, requirements had changed, and the project had become decoupled from Steam Machine. The report also said his sources did not expect a reveal during the rest of 2026. | This was another account of unofficial claims, not a confirmed delay or a statement of Valve’s plans. abit.ee’s report |
Are the reveal and release dates credible?
No date in these reports is an official date. The 2025 summer reveal and winter release were explicitly framed as possibilities and guesswork. The predicted year-end 2025 reveal did not produce a Valve announcement in the reporting reviewed. The spring 2026 Steam Machine launch window was also a source-attributed expectation, not a published schedule; subsequent reporting described the supposed game as no longer coupled to that hardware.
#1 Best Overall
- New weapons; new levels; solve a variety of puzzles; first-person shooter
Specific windows can sound more certain than the underlying evidence. Here, claims about timing rely on commentators or anonymous sources, and at least one set of earlier dates had already passed when a later launch rumor was reported. Treat any new date as speculation unless Valve announces it through an official channel.

What the evidence supports
- Official status: Valve’s public page does not identify Half-Life 3 or HLX. Its mention of secret projects leaves their identity and existence unresolved.
- Code-name connection: HLX is associated with Half-Life 3 by interpretation, not by Valve confirmation.
- Development claims: Reports of broad playtesting, end-to-end playability, optimization, and polish come from datamining interpretations and insider claims, not an on-record Valve update.
- Steam Machine tie-in: A December 2025 report linked the rumored game to a spring 2026 hardware launch; a July 2026 report said that connection had later been dropped. Neither account was confirmed by Valve.
