If Hades crashes on your Steam Deck, first identify whether the game closes to the Steam library, freezes, or causes the whole Deck to restart. Then work through the low-risk steps below: update and restart SteamOS, try Hades’ Vulkan renderer, verify the game files, and isolate third-party apps. None is a guaranteed fix, and the right next step depends on the symptom.
First, identify what is crashing
A game closing to the library, an in-game freeze, and a full Deck reboot are different failures. Note which one occurs, whether it happens at the same point each time, and whether it began after a game or SteamOS update. Also note any third-party applications or plugins you added through Desktop Mode. These details help describe the problem; they do not establish its cause.
- Hades closes to Steam: Start with the game-specific rendering and file checks below.
- The game freezes: Try the same steps, noting whether the freeze is repeatable and whether audio or controls continue.
- The entire Deck restarts or becomes unstable: Prioritize Valve’s system-update, restart, and third-party-app guidance.
1. Update SteamOS and restart the Deck
Valve recommends installing available system updates and restarting the Steam Deck when troubleshooting general instability. Use the current software-update controls under Settings > System; labels and paths may change between SteamOS versions. After the update and restart, launch Hades again and check whether the same failure returns. Valve’s Steam Deck software and troubleshooting guide covers this as general Deck advice, not as a diagnosis specific to Hades.
2. Try Hades with Vulkan rendering
Supergiant Games recommends choosing Vulkan rendering when starting Hades on Steam Deck for optimal performance. Select the Vulkan option in the game’s launch prompt if it appears, then play long enough to see whether the original crash recurs. This is an officially recommended configuration to try, not a guarantee that Vulkan fixes every crash. Supergiant’s February 25, 2022 announcement includes the Deck recommendation.

3. Verify Hades’ installed files
Missing or corrupted game files can cause launch or graphical problems. Supergiant recommends verifying the installation to replace affected files. In Steam, open Library > Hades > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. Older guides may call the tab “Local Files.” Let Steam finish the check, then launch Hades again. Supergiant’s technical support guide describes file verification; its broader PC troubleshooting advice should not be mistaken for a Deck-specific crash diagnosis.
4. Temporarily close third-party applications
If the Deck remains unstable, exit or disable third-party applications installed through Desktop Mode, restart the Deck, and test Hades again. This isolation step follows Valve’s general stability guidance; it does not mean a particular app or plugin is known to cause Hades crashes. If the game works with those applications closed, re-enable them one at a time to narrow down what changed.

Use controller troubleshooting only for input problems
If the issue is specifically an external controller failing to connect or respond, Supergiant’s Hades FAQ recommends disabling Steam Input for Hades and checking that the controller firmware is current. Those steps address controller connection or input issues; the FAQ does not identify them as a general crash fix. See the Hades FAQ for its Deck-specific controller and save-data guidance.
What Deck Verified does—and does not—tell you
Supergiant announced Hades as Steam Deck Verified on February 25, 2022. In Valve’s compatibility system, Verified means a game is expected to work well on Deck out of the box, based on criteria such as input, display, seamlessness, and system support. It is a compatibility baseline, not a promise that an individual player will never encounter a crash. Valve says its review process is ongoing, so check the game’s current Steam store rating for the latest status. Valve’s Verified explanation describes the criteria; Supergiant’s announcement records the game’s certification.

If Hades still crashes
Contact Supergiant through its support page if the listed troubleshooting does not resolve the problem. Include concise details that can help support assess the failure:
- Your SteamOS version and the Hades update or build timing, if known.
- Whether you selected Vulkan, and what happened when you tested it.
- Whether Hades closed, froze, or the whole Deck restarted—and when in play it happened.
- Any error message, plus whether the issue persists with third-party applications closed.
Avoid deleting save files as an initial crash fix. The Deck section of the Hades FAQ discusses cloud/local save behavior and multiple accounts, but does not prescribe save deletion to address crashes. Back up save data before making any changes to it.
Quick Recap

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
