In the original Half-Life, first check Options > Keyboard > Advanced for an “Enable developer console” setting. Turn it on and apply the change, then press the console key. Steam documents the tilde key (~) for English/US keyboard layouts; the key may differ on other layouts.
Enable the console from the game’s options
- Start Half-Life and open Options.
- Select Keyboard, then Advanced.
- If the option is present, check Enable developer console (~) and apply the change.
- Return to the game and press the console key. Steam identifies
~as the key for English/US keyboard configurations; on other layouts, try the key associated with the console or check the game’s keyboard bindings.
Steam’s instructions describe this menu route for most Valve titles rather than giving a Half-Life-specific walkthrough. A 2009 Half-Life walkthrough also records the Options > Keyboard > Advanced setting, but its menu details are historical and may not match every installed build.

If the setting is missing or the console will not open
Try the Steam launch option -console. Steam says this option starts a game with the developer console enabled; a historical guide for the original Half-Life also documents launching with hl.exe -console.
- Close the game.
- In your Steam Library, open Half-Life’s properties and find Launch Options.
- Enter
-console, close the properties window, and start the game. - Press the console key. If tilde does not work, account for your keyboard layout or custom bindings.
Steam’s launch-option guidance is general, and the older Half-Life guide is not a guarantee that every current build behaves identically. The in-game setting is the simplest first attempt when it is available.

Console access is not the same as enabling cheats
The developer console is the interface for entering commands. Enabling it does not automatically enable cheats. The historical GameSpot guide says to enter sv_cheats 1 in the console if cheats are not already enabled; that command concerns cheat access, not making the console appear.
