Its open-world Master Chief story and its multiplayer should be judged separately: GameSpot scored the campaign 9/10 and multiplayer 7/10, while Steam’s English user reviews were 68% positive among 137,969 reviews when accessed in 2026. The free multiplayer includes more than matchmaking, with Academy tutorials, Custom Games and Forge creation tools.
What do the Halo Infinite reviews say?
There is no single score that captures both halves of Halo Infinite. GameSpot’s review hub gives the game an overall 8, while its component reviews score the campaign 9 and multiplayer 7. The hub also displays a Metacritic score of 87; that is Metacritic’s figure as shown by GameSpot, not GameSpot’s own score. These are outlet assessments, not a combined consensus.
Steam reflects player recommendations rather than critic ratings. Its listing showed 68% positive among 137,969 English user reviews in 2026 and labeled the overall status “Mixed.” Steam also showed 64% positive among 542 recent reviews, likewise labeled “Mixed.” Both figures are snapshots that can change as reviews arrive; Steam says it excludes review activity it considers off-topic from the score. See Halo Infinite on Steam.

Is Halo Infinite free?
Only multiplayer and Academy are free. Halo Support says Campaign must be purchased or accessed through some Xbox Game Pass memberships. The free multiplayer and paid campaign have separate store listings; physical discs provide access to the full game, including Campaign. Game Pass eligibility depends on the membership, so check the current plan details before subscribing for campaign access. Halo Support explains access options.

Is the campaign worth buying?
The campaign is the part to consider if you want a solo Master Chief adventure rather than simply a free multiplayer shooter. Officially, it follows Master Chief as he explores mysteries on Zeta Halo; Steam describes it as an expansive open-world campaign. GameSpot’s campaign score is 9, but that is an individual outlet’s review judgment, not a guarantee that its open-world structure or story will suit every player.
Rank #2
Buy or access the campaign if that kind of solo exploration is the reason you want to play. If you are mainly curious about shooting, competitive matches or making maps, start with free multiplayer instead and decide whether you want the story afterward.
What is included in the free multiplayer?
Multiplayer covers several ways to play, not just ranked competition. Halo Support describes Arena and Big Team Battle map and mode suites, team and solo options, PvP and PvE, matchmaking, Custom Games with friends, and split-screen multiplayer. Academy tutorials offer an entry point for learning the game. Multiplayer supports crossplay and cross-progression: Battle Pass progression and customizations associated with a Gamertag carry across platforms where you sign in.
Forge and custom play
Forge is an in-game suite for creating multiplayer maps and modes. It is included with free-to-play multiplayer, and player-made maps can be played in Custom Games. That makes the free version useful not only for people seeking public matches but also for friends who want to build, test or play custom content.

Halo Waypoint describes Operation: Infinite as Halo Infinite’s “last planned multiplayer update.” Its announcement lists new maps, refreshed Ranked Seasons, permanent progression boosts, more than 200 customizations in The Exchange, and free and premium 100-tier Operation Passes. The announcement says the passes have no expiration date and describes an anniversary bundle available to players who play during 2026.
