To erase the Wii’s internal system data, open Wii Options > Wii Settings, go to page 3, and select Format Wii System Memory. Enter the Parental Controls PIN if prompted, then confirm by selecting Format three times. Nintendo warns that erased data cannot be recovered.
What formatting the Wii deletes—and what it leaves behind
Formatting erases data stored in the Wii’s system memory, including system settings, game and channel save data, downloaded games and channels, custom channel settings, Mii characters, and Message Board content. It also changes the Wii Number. Nintendo says licenses for downloaded games and channels are retained, but the save information is lost and downloaded content must be obtained again. Formatting does not erase an SD card or Nintendo GameCube memory card. The operating system, MAC address, and sync information also remain. If you are passing those cards along with the console, handle their contents separately.
Format the Wii system memory
You need a working Wii Remote to navigate the menus. Follow these steps from the Wii Menu:

- Select Wii Options at the lower-left corner.
- Select Wii Settings.
- Select the right arrow twice to reach page 3.
- Select Format Wii System Memory.
- Enter the Parental Controls PIN if prompted.
- Select Format three times to confirm.
Do not confirm until you have preserved anything you want to keep. Nintendo’s instructions are at Format a Wii Console’s System Memory.
Delete selected saves or channels instead
If you want to remove only particular items, use the Wii’s Data Management menus rather than formatting the entire system memory.

- Wii save data: Open Wii Options > Data Management > Save Data > Wii, select the item, then choose Erase.
- Channels: Open Wii Options > Data Management > Channels, select a channel, then choose erase. Deleting a channel does not delete its game license or save information, and some pre-installed channels cannot be deleted.
- SD card contents: Use the SD Card tab under Save Data to review and delete items from the card; formatting system memory does not clear it.

Nintendo recommends removing the Wii Shop Channel account as a separate step before you transfer the console. Open the Wii Shop Channel settings and choose Remove Wii Shop Channel Account. Enter the console serial number and Parental Controls PIN if requested, then confirm. Nintendo warns that account removal deletes downloaded content and transaction history, which cannot be retrieved. Follow Nintendo’s Wii Shop Channel account-removal instructions.

This account action and system-memory formatting are separate. If the transfer includes an SD card or GameCube memory card, review and erase those separately as well.
