The Bible gives no measurable length or weight for Leviathan. Job 41 describes an untamable, fearsome sea creature, but offers no dimensions; the often-repeated 300-mile figure comes from later rabbinic legend, not the biblical text.
Does the Bible say how big Leviathan is?
No. Job 41—the Bible’s most extended description of Leviathan—provides no length, weight, or other physical measurement. Its images of closely fitted shields, extraordinary strength, resistance to weapons, and a fiery mouth convey a creature beyond human control, not measurable anatomy. The chapter says, “On earth it has no equal, a creature without fear” (Job 41:33, NRSVUE).
So a claim that biblical Leviathan was a specific number of feet long is not supported by Job 41. The text’s portrayal communicates overwhelming scale rhetorically rather than numerically.
Is Leviathan a fish or a sea monster?
The title’s word “fish” is understandable, but the biblical passages do not establish Leviathan as a fish in the biological sense. Isaiah 27:1 calls it “the fleeing serpent,” “the twisting serpent,” and “the dragon that is in the sea,” language that supports serpentine sea-monster imagery rather than a definite zoological identification (Isaiah 27:1, NRSVUE).

Interpretations vary by passage. Some readings treat Leviathan as a formidable sea creature; others understand it in connection with chaos, death, hostile power, or political symbolism. The figure has also been compared with Lotan, a sea monster in Ugaritic tradition. These are interpretive frameworks, not settled proof that Leviathan was one particular species (Duane Garrett’s discussion).
Where does the 300-mile claim come from?
A 300-mile figure appears in a rabbinic legendary anecdote reported by the Jewish Encyclopedia: a fish claims to be 300 miles long before entering Leviathan’s jaws. The entry attributes the tradition to Rabbi Johanan but does not specify when the original tradition arose. It is a fantastic detail in a later legend—not a measurement in the Bible, a modern statistic, or a scientific estimate.
Is Leviathan the same as the prehistoric whale Livyatan?
No. Livyatan melvillei is a real extinct whale whose name refers to the biblical Leviathan. It is a separate fossil animal, and estimates of its body length depend on reconstruction. Those estimates cannot be used to assign a size or species to the biblical figure (Natural History Museum overview).

- Biblical Leviathan: no exact length or weight is stated.
- The 300-mile figure: a legendary claim in a rabbinic anecdote, not a biblical or scientific measurement.
- Livyatan melvillei: a separate extinct whale; its estimated size does not establish Leviathan’s size.
The most accurate answer is therefore that Leviathan’s physical size is unspecified. The biblical portrait presents a terrifying, unconquerable sea creature, but does not let readers calculate how long it was.
