In current retail World of Warcraft, go to Orgrimmar’s lower portal room and speak with the Thrallmar Mage beside the Shattrath portal. If the Mage offers a Hellfire Peninsula travel option, select it. In Classic or Burning Crusade Classic, use the Dark Portal in the Blasted Lands instead.
Current retail WoW: find the Thrallmar Mage
- Enter the portal-room area from Orgrimmar’s main entrance hallway.
- Follow the side hallway on the left down to the lower portal room.
- Speak with the Thrallmar Mage next to the Shattrath portal. Choose the Hellfire Peninsula option if it appears in the dialogue.
The retail route described in Blizzard forum guidance is an NPC teleport, not necessarily a separate portal labelled Hellfire Peninsula. The dialogue option may not be available for every character or game state; the available guidance does not establish any level, quest, or unlock requirement. Blizzard forum guidance
If the Hellfire Peninsula option is missing
Use the nearby Shattrath portal as an alternative route into Outland, then continue from Shattrath toward your destination. The forum guidance identifies Shattrath as another route context, but does not establish exact onward travel steps or explain why the direct option might be absent.
Classic and Burning Crusade Classic: cross the Dark Portal
- Travel to the Dark Portal in the Blasted Lands.
- Cross the portal to arrive in Hellfire Peninsula.
This is the route described for Burning Crusade Classic; do not assume the retail portal-room NPC directions apply to every Classic version. Blizzard’s 2021 Burning Crusade Classic announcement describes crossing the Dark Portal into Hellfire Peninsula, and a 2015 Black Temple article identifies the Dark Portal in the Blasted Lands as the way to reach the zone.

Why older guides show a different Orgrimmar portal
Some older references place a physical Hellfire Peninsula portal in Orgrimmar’s Valley of Spirits. Blizzard’s Orgrimmar city guide lists that location, but it is an older city reference rather than definitive directions for the current retail layout. A 2018 forum answer also describes a portal arrangement that should be treated as historical. Later forum guidance instead points retail players to the lower portal room and the nearby Thrallmar Mage. Check that a guide matches your game version and its publication date before following portal-location directions.
