A broken or outdated Sims 4 mod is one possibility when the game misbehaves, especially after an update, but symptoms alone cannot confirm it. Check the mod creator’s compatibility notes, test the game with mods disabled, and add files back in batches until you can reproduce the problem.
What are signs that a Sims 4 mod may be broken?
There is no single symptom that proves a mod is responsible. EA notes that game bugs can cause similar problems, so treat these as clues and verify them with a controlled test.

- The game will not start or a save will not load.
- Custom content looks wrong, such as a hat floating above a Sim.
- Gameplay behaves unexpectedly.
- You see an error code associated with possible mod or script issues.
EA associates errors 102, 123, 125, 127, 129, and 131 with possible script issues, and says error 110 usually appears after an update and is caused by outdated mods. These associations are not a diagnosis: check EA’s support article and use the tests below to establish whether mods are involved.
How do you check whether a mod is outdated?
- Note your game version. Find it on the main menu and note when the issue began. A problem that starts after an update makes a mod worth checking, but does not prove the update caused it.
- Check the creator’s page. Look for compatibility notes for your current game version, an updated file, or instructions to replace or reinstall the mod. A mod that used to work may need an update after a game patch, and creators may need time to release one.
- Use community lists as leads, not guarantees. EA Forums maintain patch-related broken and updated lists. They are dated and selective, so a mod missing from a list is not necessarily compatible. For example, a community list for patch 1.128 was dated September 22, 2026; verify the specific mod with its creator rather than treating that snapshot as a current safety guarantee.
How to test Sims 4 without mods
Test without mods before changing or deleting files. EA recommends checking whether the game works without them, then closing without saving before restoring content. The EA Forums’ vanilla-test instructions explain how to temporarily move the Mods folder and restart the game.

- Customize your Sims’ looks and their home with new family fashion and build items. Give the kids’ bedrooms extra personality, remodel the kitchen to feel homier, and let your Sims express their sporty or artistic sides with new outfits.
- Back up your saves. Do this before a game update, and before troubleshooting if you want an extra recovery point.
- Close the game. Do not move files while the game is running.
- Temporarily move the Mods folder. Move it out of the Sims 4 folder rather than deleting it. Follow the EA Forums vanilla-test instructions for the folder location and restart procedure.
- Reopen the game and repeat the same action that caused the problem. If the issue remains, mods may not be the cause. If it disappears, a mod or custom-content file becomes more likely.
- Exit without saving. A session played without custom content or gameplay mods can change what appears in your save. Do not save if content is missing or the session would otherwise alter the save in an unwanted way.
How to find the problem file with batch testing
If the issue goes away with mods removed, test your files in batches rather than restoring everything at once. The EA Forums describe this as 50-50 testing; the same approach works by repeatedly splitting any suspect batch.
- Close the game and restore a portion of your Mods files.
- Restart and repeat the action that reproduced the issue. Keep a list of the files in each batch.
- If the issue returns, split that batch into smaller groups and test again. If it does not return, test another portion of the remaining files.
- Repeat until the smallest batch or individual file that brings the issue back is identified. Some problems may involve more than one file, so test the final suspect in the context where the issue occurred.
Remove or replace the suspect file only with a version its creator says is compatible. If necessary, turn mods back on in the game options, relaunch, and test again. Keep the save backup until you have confirmed the game behaves as expected.

Check the creator’s own page for the mod’s current status and installation directions.
