Trade the Pokémon to another player: Kadabra, Machoke, Graveler and Haunter evolve this way without an item. Several other SoulSilver trade evolutions require the Pokémon to hold a specific item when the trade takes place. On original hardware, the documented route is local Nintendo DS wireless communication; Nintendo’s official DS online service ended on May 20, 2014.
Pokémon that evolve when traded in SoulSilver
For these four, simply trading is enough; no held item is required:
- Kadabra evolves into Alakazam.
- Machoke evolves into Machamp.
- Graveler evolves into Golem.
- Haunter evolves into Gengar.
Other listed trade evolutions require the Pokémon to be holding the matching item when it is traded. Check its held item before starting the trade.
| Pokémon to trade | Held item required | Evolution |
|---|---|---|
| Poliwhirl | King’s Rock | Politoed |
| Slowpoke | King’s Rock | Slowking |
| Onix | Metal Coat | Steelix |
| Scyther | Metal Coat | Scizor |
| Seadra | Dragon Scale | Kingdra |
| Porygon | Up-Grade | Porygon2 |
| Clamperl | DeepSeaTooth | Huntail |
This game-specific list is drawn from a community-maintained HeartGold/SoulSilver evolution reference. A general trade-evolution list may also mention Clamperl holding DeepSeaScale evolving into Gorebyss, but that branch is not included in the cited SoulSilver-specific list; verify its availability in SoulSilver before relying on it.

How to trade locally on original hardware
SoulSilver supports Nintendo DS Wireless Communications. You need another compatible Nintendo DS system and a trading partner with a compatible Pokémon game. Nintendo’s SoulSilver manual lists HeartGold, Platinum, Diamond and Pearl among the compatible games.
- Make sure both players have a compatible system and game, and that the Pokémon to evolve is ready to trade. For item evolutions, confirm it is holding the required item.
- Use SoulSilver’s in-game wireless trading facilities to connect locally with the other player and trade the Pokémon.
- Allow the trade to complete; the eligible Pokémon evolves during the trade. The other player can then trade it back if you want to keep it.
Can you trade online or use Pokémon HOME?
Nintendo discontinued its official Wi-Fi Connection service for DS and DSi software effective May 20, 2014. Nintendo’s service notice says online features such as play and matchmaking would no longer be available. The closure ended official online matchmaking for SoulSilver, but not local DS wireless communication; Nintendo’s SoulSilver product information likewise warns that DS/DSi online features are no longer available.
Pokémon HOME has trading features of its own, but Nintendo’s supported-game information does not list SoulSilver as a game that connects directly to HOME. HOME therefore cannot start a trade inside SoulSilver.
