There is no required creature count in Commander. The rules require a 100-card deck, including your commander, but leave the number of creatures up to you. Choose a count that supports your commander’s plan, fills the jobs your deck needs, and gives you enough ways to win—not a universal ratio.
What the Commander rules require
Wizards’ Commander format rules require exactly 100 cards, counting the commander, and impose singleton and color-identity restrictions. They do not set a minimum or maximum number of creature cards. The creature count in the other 99 is a deckbuilding choice, not a legality test.
Start with your commander and win condition
Decide how the deck is meant to win, then choose cards that advance that plan. EDHREC’s Commander deckbuilding guide recommends building around a clear route to victory and tailoring the list to the commander. If creatures are central to that route—because they enable the strategy, build its board, or deliver the finish—your list may need many creature slots. If the plan works through spells or other card types, fewer creatures may make more sense.
Think about what the commander itself contributes, too. A commander that supplies card access or acts as a major threat may change which jobs the other 99 need to cover. The right count depends on the whole list, not just the commander’s type or theme.

Count the jobs your cards perform
Instead of aiming for a creature quota, check whether the deck has cards for the jobs it needs. Common jobs include ramp, card draw or other card access, interaction, synergy pieces, threats, and ways to close a game. Creature type alone does not tell you whether a card earns its slot: one creature might provide ramp and synergy, while a noncreature spell might handle interaction more effectively.
- Ramp: How will you develop the mana to play your cards?
- Card access: How will you keep finding useful plays?
- Interaction: Can you answer opposing threats or disruptive plays?
- Strategy and pressure: Do you have the pieces that make your commander’s plan work?
- Closing power: Once you have an advantage, how does the deck turn it into a win?
These are roles to evaluate, not fixed category sizes. A card can serve more than one role, and the balance depends on your particular strategy.

Check curve and timing, not just the count
A list can have plenty of creatures on paper and still lack useful plays at the points in a game when it needs them. Review when your cards can be cast and what you expect them to accomplish on those turns. EDHREC’s guide recommends mapping out expected turns as part of building and tuning a deck. A creature that supports your plan but arrives too late to solve an early-game gap may not fill the role you need at that moment.
Use comparable decks as context
For another perspective, compare lists using the same commander and a similar strategy. EDHREC can help show which cards appear in community-submitted decks, but its FAQ explains that its data comes from deckbuilding sites including Archidekt, Moxfield, and Scryfall, and that it cannot guarantee every deck is captured. Its comparisons also account for whether a deck could legally include cards and for active filters. Treat those lists as useful context—not a complete census, official guidance, or a rule to copy.

- Includes a mix of AT LEAST 25 Rares/Uncommons which is half of the cards.
- Absolutely NO... Basic lands, Foreign, or silver/gold bordered cards.
- Some may contain Foils or Mythics but not all.
- Sets can range from Beta to the current Magic the Gathering set.
- Mint/Excellent condition only.
No reliable general average creature count is established by these sources. A number taken from a particular deck or community sample would not, by itself, establish an ideal count for Commander as a whole.

Play the deck and pay attention to the problems that recur. If you often lack early plays, run out of cards, cannot interact, or struggle to finish, identify which role is underfilled and adjust the cards responsible for it. That may mean adding or removing creatures, but the goal is to fix the role gap rather than change the creature count in isolation.
