An all-diamond full beacon pyramid takes 1,476 diamonds. But diamonds are optional: the full pyramid requires 164 accepted mineral blocks, and you can use other materials or mix them.
How many diamonds does a full beacon need?
If you build the entire pyramid from diamond blocks, you need 1,476 diamonds. Each diamond block costs nine diamonds, and the full pyramid contains 164 blocks: 164 × 9 = 1,476.
That is 23 stacks and 4 diamonds when counting diamonds in 64-item stacks. If you have already crafted the blocks, the pyramid takes 164 diamond blocks, or 16 stacks and 2 blocks.

Do you have to use diamonds?
No. Minecraft identifies iron, gold, emerald, and diamond blocks as valid pyramid materials in its “Ten Rare Recipes” article. A beacon planner also lists netherite and notes that accepted materials can be mixed in one pyramid. The material choice affects what you spend, not beacon operation, according to the planner.

The beacon is crafted separately from the pyramid. Minecraft’s official recipe uses 5 glass, 3 obsidian, and 1 nether star. Those ingredients make the beacon block; they do not add to the pyramid’s 164 mineral blocks.
