In Minecraft: Java Edition, select an empty hotbar slot and press F—the default offhand-swap key. The item moves from your left hand into the selected slot, leaving your offhand empty. If you play Bedrock Edition, the steps depend on your device and the items that edition allows in the offhand.
Remove an offhand item in Java Edition
- Select an empty slot on your hotbar.
- Press F. This swaps the selected hotbar slot with the offhand, so the item goes into the empty slot and your left hand is clear.
The key can be customized. If F does not work, open Options → Controls and check the binding for swapping an item with the offhand. Minecraft’s controls guide explains that controls can be customized.
Move it through the inventory instead
Open your inventory and move the item from the offhand slot into an empty inventory or hotbar slot. The Minecraft Wiki’s dual-wielding tutorial describes the Java inventory slot and swap method.
What to do in Bedrock Edition
Bedrock has more limited offhand item support than Java, and the available controls vary by device. If your inventory shows an offhand slot, move the item from it into an ordinary inventory or hotbar slot. The official controls guide covers keyboard, gamepad, and touchscreen controls generally, but it does not establish one universal Bedrock button sequence for removing an offhand item.

Do not assume Java’s F shortcut applies to Bedrock. Community proposals for Bedrock offhand changes are suggestions, not confirmation of controls in a released version; see the Bedrock offhand support proposal and the touchscreen offhand proposal.
Why you should not use the drop-item key
Dropping an item is different from moving it out of your hand. If you want to keep the item, use the swap or inventory method instead of the drop-item control. Minecraft’s controls guide treats dropping items separately from selecting or moving items.
