Spoilers for Lucanis’s companion quest, “A Murder of Crows.” To beat Illario at the Dellamorte Opera House, clear the Venatori Mages when they appear, then use parries and dodges to create safe openings against Illario’s sickle attacks. Ice damage is reported to be effective; fire is a poor choice.
Where is the Illario fight?
You fight Illario during Lucanis’s companion quest, “A Murder of Crows,” at the Dellamorte Opera House. Venatori enemies, including Mages, join the encounter, so it is not just a one-on-one duel. The Dragon Age Wiki’s quest account describes the encounter and its story outcomes.
How to beat Illario
- Deal with the Venatori Mages first. When they appear, thin out the supporting enemies before returning your attention to Illario. Their spells add pressure while you are trying to read his melee attacks. This priority is recommended by Game8’s encounter guide and Neoseeker’s “A Murder of Crows” walkthrough.
- Defend, then punish. Illario can interrupt ordinary attacks and has no Barrier or Armor, according to Game8. Avoid trading long attack strings into his pressure; look for a successful parry or dodge, then use the opening to deal damage.
- Watch for the teleporting slash. Illario can teleport into a slashing attack, signaled by a red circle. Be ready to evade rather than continue attacking through the warning.
- Leave the marked area during his electrical attack. After a backward leap, Illario can strike a marked patch of ground with electricity. Move out of the marked area before the attack lands, then resume attacking when it is safe. Neoseeker describes both attacks in its encounter walkthrough.
Which damage type works best?
The Dragon Age Wiki lists Illario as vulnerable to ice and resistant to fire. If your build has a suitable ice ability or damage option, use it; avoid relying on fire for this fight. Treat the weakness information as community-reported guidance, not an official combat-stat reference. No single class, companion pairing, or build is established as universally best.
What happens after the fight?
The encounter leads into a story choice involving how Lucanis should deal with Illario. The available outcome can depend on earlier story events, so do not assume every playthrough offers the same choice between mercy and imprisonment. The Dragon Age Wiki’s quest account reports that prior outcomes affect which branch is available.
