The steps differ between Java and Bedrock. If it is someone else’s world or server, its owner or administrator must give you the necessary permissions.
Before you enable commands or cheats
In Bedrock, turning on Allow Cheats permanently prevents achievements from unlocking in that world, even if you later turn cheats off again. Decide whether that trade-off is acceptable before changing the setting. Minecraft’s guide to commands describes this consequence.
Chat commands begin with a forward slash. As Duncan Geere writes in Minecraft’s official guide, “All commands written in the chat window should be preceded by a forward-slash (‘/’) character.”
Bedrock: enable cheats in a singleplayer world
- Open the world’s settings and select the Game tab.
- Turn on Allow Cheats.
- Enter the world, open chat, type
/gamemode creative, and send the command.
Minecraft’s Bedrock gamemode command reference says the command requires cheats and lists Creative as a supported mode.

Java: enable commands in a singleplayer world
- For a new world, turn on Allow Commands during world creation. For an existing world, open World Options and enable Allow Commands.
- Enter the world, open chat, type
/gamemode creative, and send the command.
Minecraft’s guide covers both the world-creation and existing-world settings. The command will not change your mode if commands are disabled.
Someone else’s world or a multiplayer server
You need the appropriate permissions to use commands. Ask the world’s owner or server administrator to grant them; you cannot give yourself permission on a server controlled by someone else. In Java, a host can open a singleplayer world to LAN and configure the game mode and command access for joining players.
