After clearing the Temple of Rot stronghold and unlocking The Den through Vessel of Hatred progression, read the Brutal Note at The Den. Follow the quest through the Fetid Larder, Grelkar’s Feast Hall, and the Arena of Guulrahn; defeating Zolmog and his Blackguards completes the recruitment quest.
What you need before starting
- Diablo IV and Vessel of Hatred: Mercenaries are an expansion feature. Blizzard lists the base game as required for Vessel of Hatred access. Blizzard’s Vessel of Hatred page.
- The Den unlocked: Progress the Vessel of Hatred main questline until The Den becomes available. Game8 identifies completing The Hand Remembers the Blade as the point after which The Den opens. Game8’s Slayer’s Retribution walkthrough.
- Temple of Rot stronghold cleared: GameSpot lists completion of this Dry Steppes stronghold as a prerequisite for starting Slayer’s Retribution. This is separate from the later objectives inside the Temple of Rot during Varyana’s quest. GameSpot’s mercenary unlock guide.
How to complete Slayer’s Retribution
- Find the Brutal Note at The Den. Interact with the note beside Raheir, on the northwestern side of The Den, to begin Slayer’s Retribution.
- Search for Varyana at the Temple of Rot. Go to the stronghold and read the Blood-Scribed Sign on its southern side. Enter the Fetid Larder and defeat the enemies inside, including Varyana. Then speak with her outside.
- Defeat Grelkar. Follow the quest marker to the Herald of Grelkar and defeat him to reveal Grelkar’s Feast Hall. Enter the hall, defeat Grelkar, and speak with Varyana after the fight.
- Defeat Zolmog in the Arena of Guulrahn. Follow the marker to the boat and use it to reach the arena. Fight through the area and defeat Zolmog and his Blackguards. This completes Slayer’s Retribution and unlocks Varyana as a mercenary.
If the quest is missing or Varyana is not unlocked
- If you cannot find the Brutal Note, check that The Den has opened through the Vessel of Hatred questline and that you completed the Temple of Rot stronghold.
- Meeting Varyana in the Fetid Larder is not the end of the recruitment quest. Continue through Grelkar’s Feast Hall and finish the fight against Zolmog.
- The available walkthrough confirms the quest reward, but does not establish the current platform-specific controls for assigning or hiring Varyana afterward. Use the live mercenary interface in your game for that step.
What Varyana does
Blizzard describes Varyana as the Berserker Crone. Her Massacre meter grows with kill streaks, so her mechanic rewards sustained kills. She is one of four Vessel of Hatred mercenaries—alongside Raheir, Aldkin, and Subo—and each has an individual questline. Blizzard’s mercenary overview.
