While a game is open, press the PS button, select Music in Control Center, then choose a recently played track or podcast. Press the PS button again to return to the game. PS5 supports music through Spotify and Apple Music in regions where those services are available, as well as compatible files from a USB drive.
Play Spotify or Apple Music during a game
- From the Media home, select All Apps.
- Choose Spotify or Apple Music, download the app, and follow the on-screen prompts to sign in or create an account and link it to your PS5.
- While playing, press the PS button to open Control Center, select Music, then choose a recently played song or podcast. It appears as a card with playback controls.
- Press the PS button to return to the game. While in a game or app, pressing it twice returns you to the most recent card.
Sony documents this Control Center method for Spotify and Apple Music, but says both services are available only in certain countries and regions. Spotify also limits in-game listening to compatible PS5 and PS4 games; its instructions exclude game streaming. So, availability can depend on both your region and what you are playing. Sony’s PS5 music instructions and Spotify’s PlayStation setup guide have the service details.
Play music files from a USB drive
For offline listening to your own files, prepare the drive on a computer before connecting it to the console:
- Format the USB drive as exFAT or FAT32.
- Create a folder named Music in the root directory of the drive, then copy your audio files into it.
- Connect the drive to the PS5, press the PS button, and select Music in Control Center.
- Choose USB Drive, then select a file.
Sony lists FLAC, MP3, and AAC as supported formats. Some files or devices may not work because of data type or file size, and copyright-protected music files cannot be played. See Sony’s USB media playback instructions for the supported setup.

Choose the method that fits

Control playback and adjust sound
Select the music card in Control Center to pause or use its playback controls; the controller can control playback. Sony’s CFI-ZMR-series Media Remote is another option, but it is sold separately and is not required.
If the music is too loud or too quiet against the game, check the audio controls in the game and your output setup. Sony’s settings guide lists Home Screen Music as a toggle for music on the PS5 home screen; that setting is separate from starting music during gameplay through the Control Center Music card. Other audio options can depend on connected devices and configuration, so the guide does not establish one universal PS5 game-versus-music mixer.
