On flat ground, water spreads up to 7 blocks horizontally from its source block. That limit describes level flow across a flat surface—not how far water can travel downward. A stream can continue falling until a block stops it.
How to count water’s horizontal spread
Start at the source block and count outward along the flat surface. The water can reach seven blocks away; it does not keep flowing level across an eighth block. The Minecraft Wiki’s fluid reference describes water’s maximum flow depth as seven, and its item-transport tutorial gives the practical rule that water flows seven blocks from a source.
Why a stream can travel farther downhill
The seven-block distance is a horizontal limit on flat ground, not a total travel limit in every direction. Water can flow down a drop and continue across a lower surface until a block stops it. Uneven terrain and intervening blocks can also change the stream’s path: the fluid reference explains that flow responds to nearby shapes and favors routes toward drops.
How to extend a flat water channel
If you need water to travel farther along a level channel, add another source rather than relying on one source to maintain level flow indefinitely. Builders commonly use multiple sources for longer streams, as described in the Minecraft Wiki’s item-transport tutorial.

What one block means as a distance
Minecraft’s distance guide treats one block as one cubic meter, which can help picture the scale: seven blocks is seven blocks of horizontal game distance. This is a scale analogy, not a measurement of the water’s volume. See the distance guide.
Does the rule differ between Java and Bedrock?
The cited fluid reference has sections covering both Java and Bedrock fluid levels, but the sources cited here do not establish every version-specific interaction. Treat seven blocks as the general flat-ground rule; exact flow paths can depend on the surrounding blocks and terrain, and the cited sources do not verify every current version or waterlogged-block configuration.
