Play Charge Blade by building phial energy in sword mode, storing it before the gauge overcharges, and spending loaded phials to charge your shield or power axe discharges. In Monster Hunter Wilds, a wound Focus Strike or a Savage Axe Slash after a Perfect Guard can activate Power Axe, giving you a reason to read the monster’s openings rather than default to the longest attack.
How the Charge Blade loop works
Charge Blade switches between sword-and-shield and axe modes. Sword attacks build phial energy; once you have enough, store it to load phials. If you keep attacking with an overcharged gauge, sword attacks can bounce. Loaded phials are the resource you spend to charge the shield or fuel axe discharges.
- Build phial energy with sword attacks.
- Store the energy before the gauge overcharges.
- Spend loaded phials to charge your shield.
- Look for an opening to activate Power Axe and pressure the monster with axe attacks or discharges.
- Return to sword mode when phials are running low or your shield needs refreshing.
The central decision is how to spend your time and phials against the opening the monster gives you. You do not need to force a discharge every time you have loaded phials.
How to activate Power Axe
Land Focus Strike: Double Rend on a wound
A Focus Strike: Double Rend that connects with a wound activates Power Axe. The move can be performed in either sword or axe mode, so you do not have to switch to a particular mode first. Focus Mode helps you aim at weak points, and a wound can be both a damage opportunity and a route into axe pressure.

Use a Perfect Guard follow-up
A Perfect Guard can lead into Savage Axe Slash, which also activates Power Axe. A precisely timed Guard Point can count as a Perfect Guard, but a normal held guard is the safer choice when you are unsure of the timing.
Once Power Axe is active, hold the attack input as an axe swing connects to add repeated saw contacts. Keep the axe lined up with a reachable weak part so those contacts land where they matter. Power Axe also reduces the phial cost of Amped Element Discharges, helping sustain an axe sequence. A specialist guide lists a 120-second duration, but that figure is patch-sensitive: the guide’s information is current through Ver. 1.020.00.00, dated July 29, 2025, so check the live game for the current duration.
Choose an attack for the opening you have
Judge how long the monster is likely to stay vulnerable before committing. A short opening favors ordinary Power Axe contacts or a shorter Amped Element Discharge. Super Amped Element Discharge is a longer commitment and spends every loaded phial, so use it when the monster is likely to remain in the attack path through the phial burst.

Focus Mode can help adjust your facing during a discharge wind-up, but direction eventually locks. Do not choose the largest animation just because it is available: if the monster can recover or move out of the path, a shorter action is the more reliable choice.

Impact or Element phials?
Neither phial type is a universal damage winner; the useful choice depends on the monster and where your explosions connect.
- Impact phials: Explosions ignore hitzones. When they hit the head, they build stun, which can create another opening.
- Element phials: Their explosions depend on the monster’s elemental hitzone, so their value varies with the target’s elemental vulnerability.
Use Wilds’ controls and Focus Mode to target openings
Focus Mode is useful for directing guards, aim, and attacks toward weak points. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s official PlayStation overview describes it as giving hunters more precise control over how they guard, aim, and attack to target weak points for big damage: PlayStation.Blog’s Monster Hunter Wilds overview. That is a general description of Focus Mode, not a Charge Blade-specific control instruction.
