Once disconnected, try a local Practice match or start a map from the console. Offline launch is not guaranteed for every account or installation; Steam says games that require an active connection may not work in Offline Mode.
Prepare CS2 before disconnecting
Steam Offline Mode works best when the client and game have already completed setup and have the information needed to sign in stored locally. Do these steps while connected to the internet:
- Sign in to Steam and select Remember me.
- Install all Steam and CS2 updates. Offline Mode prevents Steam and games from receiving updates.
- Launch CS2 once while online. Let any installation or first-run setup finish, then exit the game normally.
- In Steam settings, check that Don’t save account credentials on this computer is not selected.
- From the Steam menu, choose Go Offline… and confirm the prompt.
Close Steam normally if you are shutting down or leaving the computer. Steam warns that force-closing the client or powering down abruptly can cause it to lose stored information needed for Offline Mode. If that information is missing, Steam may require an online login.
Start a local match or map
Valve’s September 10, 2024 release notes say that practice matches and matches started with the map command use engine loopback mode by default. Loopback keeps the local match on the computer rather than sending it through the usual network path.

Use Practice
Open CS2 and start a local Practice match from the game’s play options. Choose a map and match settings, then start the match. If you want bots, use the practice settings available for that match.
Start a map from the console
Open the developer console and enter map de_dust2, substituting the map name you want to load. The loopback behavior applies to matches started this way, according to Valve’s release notes.

What Offline Mode does—and what it does not guarantee
Steam Offline Mode lets the client and eligible games run without an internet connection, but it does not make every game offline-capable. Steam notes that titles requiring an active connection or an external launcher will not work in Offline Mode. CS2’s local loopback behavior supports local practice, but it does not guarantee that the game will launch on every Steam account or installation without internet.

- Update before going offline; you cannot receive Steam or game updates in Offline Mode.
- Complete first-run setup online and keep Steam credentials saved on the computer.
- If Steam asks you to connect, or CS2 will not start, reconnect if possible and verify the client and game are fully updated and can launch normally.
