Its keyboard-and-mouse controls use the mouse to direct movement; the built-in way to move with directional input is a gamepad’s left stick.
How to move with keyboard and mouse
Use the left mouse button to direct your character’s movement. The Minecraft Wiki controls reference describes mouse-directed movement, rather than W, A, S, and D movement. It also lists mouse controls for melee and interaction actions.
You can check the available bindings in the game’s Settings or Key Bindings menu. The controls reference says other actions can be adjusted, but it does not list movement as a rebindable WASD action.
How to get directional movement
Connect a compatible gamepad and use its left stick to move. The controls reference identifies the left stick as the gamepad movement control. Check that a controller works with your platform; the reference establishes the input scheme, not compatibility for a particular model.

Can you rebind movement to WASD?
There is no documented in-game WASD movement setting in the available controls reference. A Minecraft Feedback post, originally dated May 7, 2022, reports that movement could not be rebound to WASD; later comments continued to request the feature. Those are player reports, not an official guarantee that the controls will never change.
Menu keyboard support is different
Mojang’s accessibility guidance discusses keyboard or controller navigation through menus and accessibility features. It does not document WASD as a way to move your character during gameplay, so menu navigation should not be taken as evidence of WASD movement support.
